Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has confirmed he will return for a 14th season in the NFL, ending speculation about his potential retirement. The announcement comes after a 2024-25 campaign that fell short of expectations for the Chiefs, fueling rumors surrounding the future of the veteran player.
Kelce, 36, agreed to a one-year contract worth $12 million, with the potential to earn up to $15 million through incentives, according to sources. The deal ensures he will continue to play alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes and under the leadership of head coach Andy Reid, the only NFL coach Kelce has ever known.
The decision wasn’t made lightly. Something like that definitely motivates me to say, ‘You know what? I’m not done yet.’ I still have some ideas in my mind and energy to play this sport,” Kelce added.
The tight end’s return provides a major boost to the Chiefs’ offense, which will be looking to rebound after their playoff exit last season. Kelce’s presence gives Mahomes a reliable target and a proven playmaker in crucial situations. He remains one of the NFL’s most dominant tight ends, possessing a unique blend of size, speed, and route-running ability.

General Manager Brett Veach, speaking at the NFL combine, stated, “Travis is the best. He’s an icon, and hopefully he comes back. We’ll just kind of let that process play out.” Veach also recognized the unique circumstances surrounding Kelce’s free agency, noting his accomplishments and personal life.
Kelce himself admitted to needing time to process the emotions of the previous season’s outcome. He revealed on the “New Heights” podcast with his brother, Jason Kelce, that he was following Jason’s advice to step back and clear his head. “I was following the advice of Jason Kelce,” he joked. “I was following the advice of taking a step back, since you have to let the emotions dissipate and gain your mind right. I’ve made decisions based off emotion and it hasn’t always worked out the best. So I think taking a step back, letting the emotions calm down, the frustrations of the season… Of course I desire to come back. Of course I don’t want to finish my career without getting to the Playoffs, without having one of the best years.”
The veteran tight end made it clear that he is driven by a desire to compete for another Super Bowl title. “Obviously, there’s still some of that fire and that passion, you know? I hated how that shit ended last year. I want to fix that, and I want to have the opportunity to win another damn Super Bowl,” Kelce stated emphatically.
The Chiefs now turn their attention to the upcoming NFL draft and free agency period, with Kelce’s return providing stability and a focal point for their offensive plans. The team will look to address other needs to bolster their roster and contend for another championship in the 2026 season.
