The San Francisco 49ers have significantly bolstered their defensive line, acquiring defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa from the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick, the 92nd overall selection. The move, finalized on Wednesday, addresses a critical need for the 49ers, who struggled to generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks throughout the 2025 season.

This trade comes as the Cowboys as well moved defensive lineman Solomon Thomas to the Tennessee Titans in a swap of 2026 seventh-round picks, reuniting Thomas with former coach Robert Saleh. The Cowboys are clearly undergoing a reshaping of their defensive front just months after fielding one of the NFL’s least effective units.

Addressing a Key Need for San Francisco

General manager John Lynch publicly stated last month that improving the pass rush was the 49ers’ top priority this offseason. The acquisition of Odighizuwa directly addresses that need. Cowboys Clear Cap Space, 49ers Add a Prime Player

The Cowboys’ decision to trade Odighizuwa is somewhat surprising given the four-year, $80 million contract extension he signed last March, which included $39 million fully guaranteed at signing and $52 million guaranteed overall. However, Dallas will absorb $16 million in financial penalties but will free up $4.75 million in salary cap space with the move. This suggests a broader restructuring effort is underway in Dallas.

For the 49ers, Odighizuwa, still in his prime at 27 years old, is under contract through 2028. His base salary is fully guaranteed at $16.25 million in 2026, and $20 million for each of the following two seasons. He’s expected to play a significant role alongside defensive tackles Alfred Collins, and C.J. West, providing a much-needed boost to the team’s pass rush.

Odighizuwa has appeared in 84 games (76 starts) for the Cowboys, accumulating 216 tackles and 17 sacks. He’s known for his disruptive presence and ability to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks, even if sack numbers don’t always fully reflect his impact. His arrival in San Francisco is expected to revitalize a 49ers defensive line that desperately needs a consistent threat.

The 49ers’ struggles to pressure the quarterback in 2025 were a significant factor in their offensive challenges. A more effective pass rush will not only generate more turnovers but also allow the secondary more opportunities to make plays.
