Rodalies Train Service Disrupted in Catalonia Due to High Winds
Barcelona, Spain – Parts of the Rodalies de Catalunya commuter rail network will experience disruptions on Sunday morning due to a forecast of strong winds. The service interruptions, expected to last until 1:00 PM local time (11:00 UTC), will affect the R11 line between Figueres and Portbou and the R3 line between Vic and Ripoll. Renfe, the national rail operator, has announced that replacement bus service will be provided during the disruption, and further decisions regarding train circulation will be made based on evolving weather alerts.
The disruption comes as the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has issued a red-level alert for five regions, forecasting wind gusts potentially exceeding 120 kilometers per hour (approximately 75 miles per hour). This prompted the activation of the Ventcat emergency plan by Protecció Civil, the Catalan civil protection agency. On Saturday afternoon, an ES-Alert message was sent to mobile phones in the Alt Empordà, Berguedà, Garrotxa, Ripollès, Solsonès, and northern Cerdanya regions, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor activities.
Whereas the strong winds are the primary concern, authorities are also preparing for heavy rainfall and snowfall. According to Imma Solé, the subdirector of Protecció Civil, strong waves are expected along the northern coast, and significant snowfall is anticipated in the western Pyrenees mountains. Snowfall accumulations could exceed 10 centimeters (approximately 4 inches) at altitudes above 900 meters (approximately 2,950 feet), particularly in the Vall d’Aran, northern Alta Ribagorça, and Pallars Sobirà. Higher elevations may see accumulations of 30 to 40 centimeters (12 to 16 inches). Solé also warned of the potential for “torb,” a phenomenon characterized by extremely low temperatures, reduced visibility, and disorientation, advising caution for anyone engaging in mountain activities.
Increased Fire and Rescue Readiness
In anticipation of the severe weather, the Bombers de la Generalitat (Generalitat Firefighters) have bolstered their resources for Sunday. More personnel will be available to respond to a predicted increase in simultaneous emergency calls. Reinforcements will be deployed to professional fire stations and control rooms, and volunteer fire stations will also be opened.
The Girona region, where the highest risk level is forecast, will receive additional command personnel and increased staffing at fire stations and the territorial control room. Specialized mountain rescue units from the Seu d’Urgell and Olot bases, along with their command teams, have been activated. Units from the Grup d’Actuacions Forestals (GRAF) – the forest action group – are also on standby.
Rodalies de Catalunya, administered by the Government of Catalonia and operated by Renfe Operadora, is the primary commuter and regional rail system in the autonomous community of Catalonia. The system, which began as Cercanías Barcelona/Rodalia Barcelona in 1979 and was renamed Rodalies de Catalunya in 2010, consists of 17 service lines and serves 203 stations throughout the region. In 2023, the network carried approximately 130 million passengers. The Iberian gauge track, at 1,668 mm (5 ft 5+21⁄32 in), is powered by 3,000 V DC overhead lines.
Commuters relying on the R11 and R3 lines should expect significant delays and plan alternative travel arrangements. Renfe is providing road replacement services, but passengers should anticipate longer journey times. The situation is dynamic, and updates will be provided as the weather situation evolves. It’s essential to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and heed the advice of local authorities.
The red alert issued by Meteocat underscores the seriousness of the weather conditions. Beyond the disruption to rail services, the strong winds pose a risk to infrastructure, trees, and potentially, public safety. Residents are urged to secure loose objects, avoid exposed areas, and exercise extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.
The activation of the Ventcat emergency plan demonstrates the proactive approach being taken by Catalan authorities to mitigate the impact of the severe weather. The ES-Alert messaging system is a key component of this strategy, providing timely warnings directly to citizens’ mobile phones. This allows individuals to take necessary precautions and stay safe during the storm.
As Catalonia braces for a day of strong winds and challenging weather conditions, the focus remains on ensuring public safety and minimizing disruption to essential services. The temporary suspension of rail services on the R11 and R3 lines is a precautionary measure designed to protect passengers and prevent potential accidents.
The next update regarding the Rodalies service is expected around 1:00 PM local time (11:00 UTC) on Sunday, when authorities will reassess the situation and determine whether service can be resumed. Passengers are advised to check the Renfe website (https://www.renfe.com/es/en/suburban/rodalies-catalunya) for the latest information and travel advisories.
