Rikard Norling Receives Warm Reception from AIK Fans Despite Loss – Superettan
SOLNA, Sweden – Former AIK manager Rikard Norling experienced a bittersweet return to Skytteholms IP on Saturday, as his Örebro SK side fell 3-1 in a pre-season friendly against his old club. Whereas the result wasn’t what Norling desired, the afternoon was marked by a heartfelt display of affection from the AIK faithful, who serenaded their former coach throughout the match. The encounter served as a final tune-up for both teams ahead of the upcoming Swedish football season.
Norling, who enjoyed two successful spells at AIK, including a league title win, now finds himself at the helm of Örebro SK. Reflecting on the match, Norling expressed disappointment with the result, stating, “We’re here now and lost the match 3-1. I’m disappointed due to the fact that I felt we were getting into the game and could have gotten a better result. Then we lose everything in the last ten minutes and concede a third goal. That’s how it feels right now.”
Despite making several substitutions in the latter stages of the game, Norling attributed the late collapse not to the changes in personnel, but to a lapse in focus and humility from his team. “It’s more that we need to learn to maintain focus and be much more humble than we were. It’s a combination of that rather than the substitutions,” he explained.
A Chorus of Affection from the Stands
Throughout the match, the AIK supporters made their feelings known, repeatedly chanting Norling’s name and playfully teasing him with songs like “Rikard längtar hem till AIK” (“Rikard longs to come home to AIK”) and “Det finns bara en Rikard Norling” (“There is only one Rikard Norling”). The chants were a clear indication of the lasting impact Norling had during his time at the club.
Norling acknowledged the songs, stating, “Yes, it was impossible to avoid hearing. Especially when AIK scored, it became clear how much I long to come home.” He added with a wry smile, “Then I get really angry that we conceded a goal. They know what they’re doing.”
Despite the playful ribbing, Norling insisted he interpreted the chants as a gesture of pure affection. “Yes, I take it as nothing but love, there’s nothing else. I know that’s the case, so there are no strange things about it,” he said. He emphasized the importance of ensuring Örebro SK supporters understood his commitment to the club, stating, “The most important thing when things like this happen is that all the fans who support ÖSK experience that there are no strange things. That they feel: ‘You can rely on him in all weathers.’ I try to make that clear as much as I can when things like this happen.”
When asked if being back at his former club felt special, Norling responded, “Yes, how would you yourself experience it? It’s a given. There’s no doubt how it feels, I’m very happy about that.”
Reflections on Pre-Season and the Road Ahead
Norling is returning to elite football after a stint managing FC Stockholm in the Swedish third tier. He offered a candid assessment of Örebro SK’s pre-season form, acknowledging that they have struggled against stronger opposition. “We’ve had mixed results. We haven’t been able to beat the better teams like AIK and Hammarby yet, we’re not there yet. We defend quite well, but when we try to get out with the ball, we’re not as good as we need to be. We need to improve to be able to cope with that type of team,” he explained.
However, he remains optimistic about his team’s prospects against other opponents in the Superettan. “I feel we have a better chance against the other teams. But in those matches, it’s also been close to winning (during pre-season). I’m thinking of matches against Öster, and Brage. We did well against Värnamo, but we didn’t really have a 3-0 win to our name. So we need to keep grinding every day,” Norling stated.
Örebro SK will kick off their Superettan campaign next week with an away match against Landskrona Bois at Behrn Arena. Norling acknowledged the challenge ahead, describing Landskrona as “a really good team,” but expressed confidence that his team is well-prepared. “But we’ve at least tested our wings, it’s not as if we’ve been playing Knäckebröhult during pre-season and don’t know where we stand,” he added.
The Superettan, the second tier of Swedish football, is known for its competitive nature and passionate fan bases. Örebro SK will be looking to make an immediate impact upon their return to the league, and Norling’s leadership will be crucial to their success. The blend of experience and youthful energy within the squad suggests they have the potential to challenge for promotion to the Allsvenskan.
As Norling and Örebro SK prepare for their league opener, the echoes of the AIK supporters’ chants serve as a reminder of the coach’s enduring legacy in Swedish football. While his focus is now firmly on guiding his new team to success, the warm reception he received at Skytteholms IP undoubtedly left a lasting impression.
