Fossato di Vico, Italy – The picturesque locale of Vercata, in Fossato di Vico, played host to the finale of the FITAST National Winter Championship on Sunday, March 1st. The event, organized by the historic Arcieri Castrum Fossati archery club, drew a record number of participants and served as a poignant tribute to the memory of Daniele Armillei, a beloved figure in the Italian historical archery community.
A remarkable 210 archers from the regions of Marche, Umbria, Tuscany, and Sicily participated, demonstrating the growing popularity of historical archery and the significance of the FITAST winter finale within the national sporting landscape. The Arcieri Castrum Fossati, a founding member of the federation, were lauded for their organization and hospitality.
The competition began with a moment of silence dedicated to the memory of Daniele Armillei. FITAST President Giuliano Cerioni offered heartfelt words, recognizing Armillei’s profound impact as both an athlete and a mentor. Cerioni highlighted Armillei’s dedication to introducing archery to students throughout the region, leaving a lasting legacy on the sport.
Armillei was described as a guiding force for generations of archers across Umbria and Marche, from Nocera Umbra to Gualdo Tadino. Known for his calm and patient teaching style, he instilled a passion for archery in countless individuals, leaving a mark that extended beyond technical skill to encompass the human spirit of the sport.
The competition unfolded across a course of 20 shooting stations strategically positioned within the Oasi della Vercata nature reserve. Archers tested their precision, focus, and sportsmanship against 3D animal targets, set against the backdrop of the reserve’s natural beauty. Following the competition, participants enjoyed a communal lunch, taking advantage of the picnic areas and the tranquil surroundings.
The afternoon culminated in an awards ceremony attended by the Mayor of Fossato di Vico, Lorenzo Polidori, who similarly took the opportunity to honor the memory of Daniele Armillei. Polidori expressed his hope that the event, now in its fifth year, would continue to grow as a central fixture on the FITAST calendar.
Awards were presented for both the day’s competition and the overall FITAST Winter Championship, recognizing individual and team achievements. The Castrum Collis Palumbi team from Colpalombo emerged as a dominant force, securing multiple national titles and numerous podium finishes.
Arco Storico, with archers Mauro Ragni, Alessandro Cinquepalmie, and Mirco Falleri, and Arco Foggia Storica, featuring Stefano Berellini, Patrizio Capitani, and Fausto Bellucci, were crowned 3D FITAST National Champions. Individually, Mauro Ragni (Messere Arco Storico) and Stefano Berellini (Messere Arco Foggia Storica) claimed national titles. Valentina Dragoni secured a silver medal in the Madonne Arco Storico category, while Patrizio Capitani earned a silver in the Messere Arco Foggia Storica category, and Marta Arcelli took bronze in the Madonne Arco Storico competition.
The success of the event underscores Fossato di Vico’s growing reputation as a hub for historical archery in Italy. The combination of a challenging course, a stunning natural setting, and a strong sense of community made for a memorable championship. The FITAST National Winter Championship continues to build momentum, attracting a wider range of competitors and solidifying its place as a key event in the historical archery calendar.
