PARIS – Paris Saint-Germain suffered a setback in their Ligue 1 title defense Friday, falling 3-1 to a sharp Monaco side at the Parc des Princes. The defeat, PSG’s fourth league loss of the season, raises questions as the team prepares for a crucial Champions League tie against Chelsea next week. Despite the result, Luis Enrique sought to project calm, acknowledging his team’s struggles but emphasizing the need to regain confidence.
Maghnes Akliouche opened the scoring for Monaco in the 27th minute, followed by Aleksandr Golovin extending the lead in the 55th. Bradley Barcola offered a glimmer of hope for PSG with a goal in the 71st minute, but Folarin Balogun quickly extinguished it, sealing the victory for Monaco with a well-placed strike just two minutes later. The result leaves PSG four points clear of Lens at the top of the Ligue 1 table, though Lens have a game in hand. Monaco, meanwhile, continue their strong form and sit fifth in the league.
Enrique, speaking after the match, admitted his side was uncharacteristically imprecise. “We need to review the match to judge accurately, but I think we were very imprecise in several parts of the game and we saw unusual mistakes,” he said. “When you do that against a team in positive momentum like Monaco, you pay for it. The first goal was a gift.” He acknowledged the widespread imprecision throughout the match was clear to notice.
Despite the disappointing performance, Enrique dismissed the idea that the issues were predictable based on training sessions. “No, but training is different from competition,” he stated. “I don’t want to lose confidence in this team. That would be simple. We showed, like our supporters, the mentality to continue until the end. When we were in a moment where we could have changed the result, we conceded a goal and that was the end of the match.” He conceded the result wasn’t ideal heading into the Champions League, but expressed a willingness to address the issues.
The defeat raises concerns about PSG’s recent form, having conceded 10 goals in their last six matches. Enrique, however, downplayed the defensive issues, stating, “The first goal was a gift. The second, I don’t remember” – referencing a missed clearance by Vitinha. “And the third, a deflected shot… We are one of the best defenses in Ligue 1 and the Champions League. If you want to talk about one, two, or three matches where we have conceded more goals than usual, that’s true, I can’t deny it, but that’s not the habit.”
Enrique was firm in his belief that the issues stemmed from a mental lapse rather than physical fatigue. “When there are problems, it’s first in the head,” he explained. “We have already lost many matches in our career. It’s a terrible feeling. You have to know that it was just a match. You are always looking for a key point, but it’s so different… There are always several factors. Confidence isn’t something you buy at Monoprix. It’s built day by day in training, in matches… We are not in a moment like that, we are clearly in difficulty. We have to hope to change that and that’s what I think in view of the next match.”
When pressed on what adjustments PSG needed to make ahead of their Champions League clash with Chelsea on Wednesday, Enrique deflected the question, stating, “It’s time to talk about Monaco. There are no conclusions to be drawn. I don’t have to talk about the Champions League match. We will talk about it extensively in the coming days, that will be enough.”
The coach also remained tight-lipped regarding the absence of Ousmane Dembélé from the starting lineup. “No, I have nothing to say about that,” he responded.
Despite the current difficulties, Enrique remained optimistic about PSG’s ability to turn things around. “It was a strange match… We made a lot of mistakes, by different players. When you are in a moment like this, it’s difficult to change… I have been in this position often in my career. It’s not the best moment for that because it’s a key moment. It’s up to us to change that, correct that, regain confidence. I want to be optimistic with my players and the team to try to regain confidence and receive through to the Champions League.”
Enrique acknowledged the need for a collective effort to address the team’s shortcomings. “It’s up to us to change this, correct this, regain confidence,” he reiterated. “We have to hope to change that, and that’s what I think in view of the next match.”
The Parc des Princes witnessed a crowd of 46,806 on Friday, but the atmosphere was far from celebratory as Monaco’s clinical performance exposed vulnerabilities in the PSG squad. The team now faces a critical week, with the Champions League tie against Chelsea looming large. The pressure is mounting on Enrique and his players to rediscover their form and avoid a potential early exit from Europe’s premier club competition.
PSG will need to quickly address their defensive frailties and rediscover their attacking fluency if they are to stand a chance against Chelsea. The upcoming days will be crucial in determining whether they can regain their confidence and salvage their season.
