The Chinese Basketball Association has trimmed its Hall of Fame recommendation list, reducing the number of candidates across various categories, with the final selection set for December.
The Selection Process Narrows the Field
The recommendation phase winnowed the initial pools across multiple categories, cutting the men’s athlete field from seven names to five, reducing women’s candidates from six to five, trimming coaches from four to three, and lowering referees from three to two. Deloitte acts as the independent agency managing form distribution, collection, and vote tabulation for a 350-member working group comprising current players, retired athletes, coaches, referees, media members, and fan representatives.
The remaining 15 individual candidates and two collectives now face a final review in early December, where the list will be compressed further to eight individuals and one collective, according to the governing body’s published structure.
High-Profile Exclusions in the Men’s Athlete Category
Du Feng and Zhu Fangyu, who appeared side by side on the October 8 nomination list, did not advance to the recommendation stage announced on October 26. Zhu Fangyu holds the distinction of being the Chinese Basketball Association’s first player to surpass 10,000 career points, alongside eight league titles and four Finals Most Valuable Player awards. Du Feng won seven league titles as a player, secured a three-peat as head coach of the Guangdong Hongyuan, and previously coached the senior national team.
Alongside Du and Zhu, the recommendation stage also excluded Zhang Jing, Bian Lan, Qiu Chen, Zhang Dawei, A De Jiang, the 2004 Chinese men’s national team, and the 2008 Chinese women’s national team.
Returning Candidates and New Entrants
Mengke Bateer advanced to the final five among male athletes, listed alongside the designation of “reset” because his candidacy did not clear the final review stage last year. Bateer was a central figure among China’s prominent centers and the first Chinese player to capture an NBA championship ring. Other candidates carrying the “reset” marker include Zhan Shuping, Sui Feifei, Zheng Wei, Wang Chang’an, and the 2008 Chinese men’s Olympic team.
Chen Nan entered the recommendation pool for the first time without a reset tag. Born in 1983, Chen joined the national team at age 16 and established herself as the starting center a year later, scoring 50 points in the 2001 Asian Championship final against Japan and recording 26-point performances against New Zealand and Russia during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Early Pioneers Join Hall of Fame Candidate Pool
The Hall of Fame framework mandates that both men’s and women’s athlete pools must include at least one candidate from the 1949 to 1974 era to preserve the historical foundation of the sport. Early pioneers on the current list include Lu Dinghou, born in 1927, alongside Wang Zhaoyu, Ma Shenmei, Lü Changxin, Han Maofu, and Wang Chang’an.
The final induction list will be determined in early December, narrowing the current 15 individuals and two collectives down to eight individual inductees and one collective.
