Piedrabuena, in the province of Ciudad Real, Spain, played host to the first multi-sport concentration of the Zona Montes Norte within the Provincial Championship of School Sports on Saturday, March 7th. The event, organized by the Diputación de Ciudad Real, aims to promote youth athletics in smaller municipalities – those with populations under 10,000 – and will consist of four stages throughout the season.
Six localities participated in the inaugural event: Porzuna, El Robledo, Alcoba de los Montes, Horcajo de los Montes, El Torno, and the host city, Piedrabuena. A total of eight teams competed – two from Porzuna and two from El Robledo – with approximately 80 young athletes taking part. The focus of the day was on both fútbol sala (indoor soccer) and badminton, providing a diverse athletic experience for the participants.
Badminton Champions Crowned in Piedrabuena
The badminton competition saw a particularly strong performance from the team representing Horcajo de los Montes, who emerged victorious after a closely contested final against the local team from Piedrabuena. This victory establishes Horcajo de los Montes as an early frontrunner in the badminton discipline within the championship. For those unfamiliar, badminton is a racquet sport played using a shuttlecock, requiring agility, precision, and strategic thinking.
Fútbol Sala Competition Heats Up
In the fútbol sala tournament, which is played over two stages, the teams from Horcajo de los Montes and Porzuna A demonstrated particular strength, securing strong results in the six matches played. While the fútbol sala competition is ongoing, a provisional general classification has been established. Horcajo de los Montes currently leads with 10 points, followed by Piedrabuena with 7 points, and Porzuna A with 5 points. El Robledo A holds fourth place with 4 points, while Porzuna B has 3. The AET team, a combined squad from Alcoba de los Montes and El Torno, currently has 2 points, and El Robledo B trails with 1 point.
It’s worth noting that the fútbol sala standings are preliminary, and the final rankings will be determined after the completion of the second stage of the competition. The dynamic nature of the tournament ensures continued excitement and competition among the participating teams.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the event prioritized the integration of young people into sports from an early age, promoting physical activity, camaraderie, and a fun, engaging environment. The next stage of the championship is scheduled for Saturday, March 28th, in Porzuna. This event will feature competitions in fútbol 8 (eight-a-side soccer) and “Jugando al Atletismo” (Playing Athletics), expanding the range of sports offered to the young athletes. This continued variety aims to cater to different interests and skill sets, further promoting broad participation in sports within the region.
