Novel “Leo-kei” Train Aims to Enhance Fan Experience on Seibu Railway’s Yamaguchi Line
TOKYO – Passengers traveling to and from BELLUNA DOME, home of the Saitama Seibu Lions, and Seibuen Amusement Park now have a new ride. The first trainsets of the L00 Series (“Leo-kei”) trains began commercial operation on the Seibu Railway’s Yamaguchi Line on March 27, 2026. Manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), the new trains are designed to improve transport capacity and passenger comfort on the automated guideway transit (AGT) system.
Modernizing Transport for Popular Destinations
The introduction of the L00 Series comes as the Seibu Railway looks to enhance the experience for visitors to two of the region’s most popular attractions. BELLUNA DOME, a prominent baseball stadium, and Seibuen Amusement Park draw significant crowds, and the upgraded train service is intended to accommodate the increased demand. The new trains feature a redesigned seating arrangement, moving away from traditional bench seats to longitudinal seating, increasing overall passenger capacity. This change directly addresses the necessitate for more efficient transport to these key destinations.
Key Features of the L00 Series
MHI delivered the initial 12 cars – comprising four cars per trainset – for the L00 Series, with further deliveries scheduled through fiscal year 2027. Beyond increased capacity, the new trains incorporate several features focused on passenger convenience and safety. These include dedicated wheelchair spaces, designated seating for children, and in-car information displays providing real-time updates and announcements.
The L00 Series too boasts several technological advancements specifically designed for AGT systems. These include an aluminum bodyshell, the MHI bogie – a rubber-tire compatible system – and a ceiling duct air conditioning system. Perhaps most notably, MHI has installed a unique A-MVCS (Advanced-Mitsubishi Vehicle Control System). This system not only controls the train’s operation but also monitors and manages the performance of all onboard equipment, offering flexibility for railway operators and ensuring reliable service.
A Focus on Passenger Experience
MHI has clearly prioritized the passenger experience in the design of the L00 Series. A large glass window has been incorporated into the partition between the driver’s cab and the children’s seating area, allowing young passengers to enjoy a unique view of the train’s operation. This thoughtful addition aims to create a more engaging and exciting journey for families.
Sustainable and Efficient Transportation
The Yamaguchi Line’s AGT system utilizes rubber tires, contributing to a smoother and quieter ride. As a low-CO2 emission transport option, the system supports broader environmental goals. The adoption of these environmentally conscious vehicles is expected to enhance the overall impression of the surrounding facilities and contribute to a more sustainable transportation network.
The commemorative ceremony marking the start of commercial operation on March 27th was attended by Tokorozawa City Mayor Masatoshi Onozuka and Higashimurayama City Mayor Takashi Watanabe, underscoring the local government’s support for the project and its anticipated benefits for the community.
MHI’s Commitment to Public Transport
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group views this project as a step towards continued innovation in public transportation. The company stated its commitment to developing safe, comfortable, and efficient transport solutions that contribute to the well-being of communities worldwide. MHI Group is a global leader in a diverse range of industries, including energy, infrastructure, and aerospace, and this project demonstrates its dedication to improving public transport systems.
The L00 Series represents a significant upgrade to the Seibu Railway’s Yamaguchi Line, promising a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers heading to BELLUNA DOME, Seibuen Amusement Park, and beyond. The integration of advanced technology and a focus on passenger needs positions the new trains as a key component of the region’s transportation infrastructure.
The next phase of the project involves the sequential delivery of additional L00 Series trainsets through fiscal year 2027, ensuring a continued improvement in service for commuters and visitors alike.
