Bordeaux, France – In the wake of a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Chauray, Girondins de Bordeaux have relieved Bruno Irlès of his duties as manager, the club confirmed Sunday through Vice-President Arnaud De Carli. The decision comes as the historic club battles for promotion in France’s National 2 league, the fourth tier of French football.
Irlès, who arrived at the club in July 2024 following Bordeaux’s administrative relegation due to financial difficulties, faced an uphill battle to restore the six-time French champions to prominence. While he guided the team to a fourth-place finish last season, falling short of the promotion target set by owner Gérard Lopez, this season’s recent form proved decisive. Consecutive losses to league leaders La Roche-sur-Yon (0-1) and Saturday’s setback against Chauray ultimately led to the club’s decision.
With seven matches remaining in the season, Bordeaux currently sits in second place, but trails La Roche Vendée by six points. La Roche-sur-Yon also has a game in hand, further complicating Bordeaux’s promotion aspirations. The recent defeats have clearly impacted the team’s morale, as Irlès acknowledged following the loss to La Roche-sur-Yon, requiring effort to “remind the players to get back on track.”
The timing of the change is particularly significant given the league’s upcoming restructuring, with the National 2 set to become Ligue 3. Irlès’s initial objective was to lead the club directly into this new league, but that goal now appears increasingly distant.
According to De Carli, the club is strongly considering Rio Mavuba, a former international midfielder who came through the Bordeaux academy and currently coaches the club’s U16 team, as Irlès’s replacement. “It’s not 100% done, but that’s what we’re aiming for,” De Carli told AFP. Mavuba’s familiarity with the club and its history could prove valuable as Bordeaux navigates this challenging period.
Irlès’s tenure was marked by challenges, including a consistent struggle to field a consistent starting eleven due to injuries. He noted after the Chauray defeat that the team had “bricolaged, modified, and changed” the lineup repeatedly throughout the week, lacking the stability of a settled team. The absence of key players, including Jan Hoekstra who was forced off at halftime during the Chauray match, further hampered the team’s performance. Irlès also pointed to physical fatigue as a contributing factor, with several players “really short physically” in the second half.
Despite the setbacks, Irlès maintained a belief in the team’s ability to compete for promotion, urging his players to continue fighting for a positive result. However, the club’s leadership clearly felt a change was necessary to reignite the team’s campaign. The decision underscores the immense pressure to return Bordeaux to a higher level of competition, a pressure felt acutely by fans and stakeholders alike.
The Girondins’ next match is yet to be scheduled, but the club will undoubtedly be focused on a swift and seamless transition to ensure they remain competitive in the promotion race. The appointment of Rio Mavuba, if confirmed, will be a key step in that process. Fans will be hoping that a return to familiar faces can provide the spark needed to turn the season around.
