From NBA Fan to Press Access: The Unexpected Journey of Yann Zerari

Landéhen, France – For many basketball fans, the NBA represents the pinnacle of the sport, a world away from the small towns of Brittany. But for Yann Zerari, a young man from Landéhen, a passion for the game and a bit of audacity opened doors to an extraordinary experience: interviewing some of the NBA’s biggest stars. His story, recently highlighted by Le Télégramme, is a testament to the power of pursuing a dream, even when it begins with a late-night fascination and a leap of faith.

Zerari’s connection to the NBA began in 2013, at the age of nine, during a dramatic NBA Finals game between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. “I remember thinking, ‘Who is this guy?’” he recalled, referring to LeBron James, whose performance helped propel the Heat to victory. That initial spark ignited a lifelong devotion to the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team he continued to support even after James’s departure in 2018. “LeBron left in 2018, but I stayed,” he said with a smile.

The opportunity that would change everything came in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeking to combine his passion with practical experience, Zerari applied for a position with the independent media outlet Dunkin’, after spotting an advertisement on what is now known as X (formerly Twitter). Still a student at the Lycée Henri-Avril in Lamballe, he began contributing articles focused on the NBA’s historical rivalries and iconic footwear. “I focused on the league’s historical rivalries, iconic shoe pairings, and conducting interviews,” Zerari explained.

A Pandemic Pivot and Access to the NBA’s Elite

The pandemic, while disruptive, ironically created an unprecedented opportunity. With in-person press conferences suspended, the NBA shifted to virtual formats, allowing Zerari, as a representative of Dunkin’, to interview players directly via video conference. Suddenly, the young fan from Brittany was posing questions to global superstars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. “It was the grail,” Zerari said, “I was completely blown away!”

One particular encounter stands out in his memory. During a press conference, Rick Carlisle, then coach of the Indiana Pacers and known for his direct and often terse interactions with the media, barely acknowledged a question from a seasoned American journalist. Zerari, bracing for a similar dismissal, decided to ask a question anyway. “I thought, ‘Oh no, we’re going to receive killed,’” he recounted. But to his astonishment, Carlisle paused, then responded with a thoughtful answer lasting nearly three minutes. “I thought he was messing with me,” Zerari admitted, “But he actually answered for three minutes!”

Zerari’s involvement with Dunkin’ also led to invitations to various NBA events. At just 19 years old, he was invited by the Ligue Nationale de Basketball (LNB) to attend the Media Day, where he had the opportunity to meet rising French basketball stars like Nolan Traoré, who now plays in the NBA. These experiences, while exciting, didn’t immediately translate into a full-time career in journalism. A brief internship with the Le Penthièvre newspaper and the eventual conclusion of his collaboration with Dunkin’ in 2024 led him to explore other paths.

From Paris to Brittany and Back to the Game

In January 2024, Zerari’s passion for the Cavaliers led him to an unexpected opportunity. As a member of a fan account on X dedicated to the team, he received an invitation to attend the NBA Paris Game, an annual event that brings NBA action to the French capital. The game featured a matchup between the Brooklyn Nets and, fittingly, the Cleveland Cavaliers. During the event, Zerari had the chance to meet current and former players, including NBA legend Austin Carr.

Today, Zerari works as a sales representative for a maintenance and repair company, but his love for the Cavaliers remains strong. He continues to share his enthusiasm for the team on X, under the handle @CavsNationFra, where he describes the atmosphere as “much more relaxed and fun.”

Yann Zerari’s story is a reminder that pursuing your passions, even in unexpected ways, can lead to remarkable experiences. While his path hasn’t followed a traditional journalistic trajectory, his dedication and enthusiasm have allowed him to connect with the world of the NBA in a way few can claim. It’s a story that resonates with the power of fandom, the opportunities created by a changing media landscape, and the enduring appeal of the game of basketball.

The NBA season continues, with the Cavaliers currently vying for playoff contention. Fans can follow the team’s progress and schedule updates on the official NBA website: https://www.nba.com/.
