Just weeks after departing Olympique de Marseille, French midfielder Darryl Bakola has shared his first impressions since arriving at US Sassuolo. The 18-year-old, who completed a reported €10 million transfer to the Serie A club, detailed the reasons behind his decision and his initial experiences in Italy.
A Project That Convinced Him
In an interview with Sassuolo Channel, the Marseille academy graduate explained that the sporting project and overall environment were key factors in his choice to leave France for Italy. Bakola, born in Clichy, France on November 30, 2007, is looking for consistent playing time to further develop his promising career.
“I decided to reach here because I liked the project. It’s a solid club in a gorgeous city, and I thought it would be great for me to flourish here,” Bakola confided to Sassuolo Channel.
This move represents a new challenge for Bakola, who hopes to continue his progression in the demanding Italian Serie A. According to Transfermarkt, his market value currently stands at €4.00 million as of February 2026.
Advice from De Zerbi and Koné
Before finalizing his transfer, Bakola consulted with several individuals close to him. He received advice from former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi, who encouraged him to fully embrace this new chapter in his career. De Zerbi previously managed Sassuolo before moving to Brighton & Hove Albion.
“De Zerbi told me that I had to enjoy myself and work to become a top-level player,” Bakola explained.
The midfielder also spoke with Ismaël Koné, who described the positive atmosphere at the Italian club. Koné, a fellow midfielder, provided insight into the club’s culture and environment.
“He told me there was an excellent atmosphere, that it would suit me well, that everyone was friendly and kind, and that it was a family club,” Bakola added.
Impressed by Domenico Berardi
During his initial training sessions with Sassuolo, Bakola was immediately struck by the technical ability of Italian forward Domenico Berardi. The young player was clearly impressed by Berardi’s skill and impact on the pitch.
“During my first training session, he scored a very beautiful goal. He lobbed the goalkeeper. When I got home, I was shocked. I told my parents,” Bakola recounted.
Bakola joined Sassuolo on February 2, 2026, signing a contract that runs through June 30, 2030, as confirmed by both clubs. He previously featured for Marseille B, making six appearances and scoring one goal, and the Marseille first team, appearing in 10 matches without finding the back of the net, according to Wikipedia.
The young midfielder’s journey through youth academies includes stints at FC Asnières (2014-2019), Racing Club de France (2019-2020), Red Star FC (2020-2022), and Olympique de Marseille (2022-2024). He was a key figure in Marseille’s 2024 Coupe Gambardella triumph, their first title in the junior cup since 1979.
Bakola has also represented France at the youth international level, featuring for the U17s (7 appearances, 1 goal), the U18s (7 appearances, 1 goal), and the U20s (2 appearances). His international career continues to develop alongside his club commitments.
