Czech Republic Falls to Korea in World Baseball Classic – Vavra Homers in Loss

South Korea Overpowers Czechia in World Baseball Classic Debut, 11-4

TOKYO – South Korea opened its 2026 World Baseball Classic campaign with an 11-4 victory over Czechia on Thursday at Tokyo Dome, marking the fourth consecutive loss for the Czech team against their Asian opponents. The result didn’t offer a promising start for Czechia, who were looking to build on their fourth-place finish in the group stage of the 2023 tournament.

A dominant offensive performance, fueled by four home runs – two from Shay Whitcomb – propelled South Korea to victory. Despite the loss, Czechia showed flashes of potential, highlighted by a three-run home run from American-born Terrin Vavra in his World Baseball Classic debut, and a late score by Marek Krejčířík.

Vavra’s Homer Provides Spark, But Not Enough

The game quickly tilted in South Korea’s favor. Czechia’s starting pitcher, Daniel Padyšák, struggled to identify his rhythm and was replaced after just one inning, having surrendered a four-run lead after a grand slam by Mun Po-kjong. Jeff Barto entered the game in relief.

“Dan Padyšák was struggling after the injury, even though it didn’t look that disappointing at first,” said Czechia manager Chadim, as reported by sources. “But then came the grand slam, and that took him out of the game. We fought back, and I’m incredibly proud of the boys.”

Czechia had an opportunity to respond in the second inning, loading the bases, but a strong defensive play by the Korean team thwarted their efforts. South Korea continued to build their lead, with Whitcomb adding a solo home run in the third inning.

Czechia Responds, But Korea Answers

The Czech team finally broke through in the fifth inning, thanks to Vavra’s dramatic three-run home run to right field. The blast cut South Korea’s lead to 6-3, injecting much-needed energy into the Czech lineup. As Czech sport reported, Vavra’s homer was the first for the Czech Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

Although, South Korea quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback. Whitcomb, playing for the Houston Astros, followed up with another home run in the same inning, extending the lead to 8-3. Jahmaie Jones added another home run in the eighth, pushing the score to 11-3.

Krejčířík managed to add a consolation run for Czechia in the ninth inning, bringing the final score to 11-4.

Looking Ahead for Czechia

“It felt good to compete against Korea face-to-face,” said Chadim. “We had the lead in hits, but we lost 1-4 on home runs, which decided the game. But it definitely helped the team, because we saw that we are capable of keeping up with such a quality team.”

The loss places Czechia in a challenging position in Group C, which also includes Australia and Chinese Taipei. Only the top two teams from the five-team group will advance to the knockout stage. The top four teams overall will secure a spot in the next World Baseball Classic tournament.

Czechia will need to regroup quickly and find consistency on both offense and defense. Their next game is crucial as they aim to stay competitive in the tournament.
