INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant run at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday, securing his place in the semi-finals for the fifth consecutive year with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Cameron Norrie. The win extends the World No. 1’s winning streak to 16 matches, but it was his post-match celebration that truly captured the attention of fans in Indian Wells.
Alcaraz, 22, playfully donned a bee costume, a gesture stemming from a dedicated group of fans and a quirky history with the buzzing insects at the tournament. The Spaniard acknowledged the fans who brought the costume, happily obliging their requests to wear it after the quarter-final win. He shared images of the moment on social media with the caption “SEMISSS!” and a bee emoji.
“Neulich war ich nach dem Spiel noch etwas bei ihnen,” Alcaraz said, referencing his interaction with the fans, as reported by sources. “Heute haben sie mir ein Bienenkostüm mitgebracht und angefangen zu rufen: ‚Zieh es an, zieh es an.‘ Also musste ich es für sie tun.” (Translated: “I was with them a bit after the game. Today they brought me a bee costume and started shouting, ‘Put it on, put it on.’ So I had to do it for them.”)
The match itself saw Alcaraz avenge a loss to Norrie last November in Paris. While Norrie briefly led in the second set, Alcaraz quickly regained control, demonstrating the form that has made him a force in men’s tennis. According to Infosys ATP Stats, Alcaraz created 10 break chances, converting four of them, in the one hour and 33-minute contest.
“I struggle a lot with his style,” Alcaraz admitted in his on-court interview. “Every time I play against him it’s always really tough for me. It’s a little bit confusing with his style, his [heavy] topspin forehand, super high. And then the backhand, really flat and really low. Sometimes it’s tricky to play against him. I’m finding the right shot. I played well. I played solid. I played aggressive when I could. I’m happy to play this level.”
This isn’t the first time bees have played a role in Alcaraz’s Indian Wells experience. In 2024, a swarm of bees caused a temporary suspension of his quarter-final match against Alexander Zverev, adding an unusual chapter to the tournament’s history. The ATP Tour reports that Alcaraz is now seeking his ninth ATP Masters 1000 trophy and his third in Indian Wells.
Alcaraz’s ability to adapt and overcome stylistic challenges was evident against Norrie. He blended powerful baseline hitting with delicate drop shots and effective net play, showcasing the all-court game that defines his success. The Spaniard finished with 19 forehand winners, demonstrating his aggressive intent.
The victory sets up a semi-final clash against Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz will be looking to continue his impressive form and secure a spot in the final. Medvedev represents a significant challenge, but Alcaraz’s current momentum and his playful connection with the Indian Wells crowd suggest he’s relishing the opportunity.
For Alcaraz, the win is more than just a step towards another title; it’s a testament to his growing popularity and his willingness to embrace the lighter side of the sport. The image of the World No. 1 in a bee costume is likely to become an iconic moment from this year’s BNP Paribas Open, further solidifying his status as one of tennis’s most charismatic stars.
Next up for Alcaraz is his semi-final match against Daniil Medvedev, scheduled for Saturday, March 14th at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Fans can follow live updates and scores on the official ATP Tour website and through various sports broadcasters.
