Barba recently made her debut with the regional team at the Spanish Alevín Championship by Autonomous Communities and the Spanish Inclusive Swimming Championship, demonstrating a maturity beyond her years. Born on September 4, 2013, Barba is a first-year ESO student at IES Bernardo Balbuena. She has faced significant health challenges since birth, living with arthrogryposis, a rare disorder characterized by joint contractures and rigidity. This condition has required twelve surgeries and ongoing medical reviews. Despite these obstacles, Barba maintains a positive outlook and has discovered a profound love for swimming.

Finding Passion in the Pool

While also enjoying futsal (playing for Viña Albali), badminton at school, and watching football, it’s in the water that Barba truly thrives. She dedicates countless hours to training, often arriving home close to 10 p.m., but insists the effort is worthwhile. “It’s in the pool where she feels fully realized,” according to reports. Her coach, Mari Nieves León, and her father, José Carlos, have been instrumental in her development.

Barba’s recent debut with the Castilla-La Mancha regional team saw them finish seventh overall. Prior to Christmas, she also competed in an international competition, an experience she described as enjoyable and enriching. “I enjoyed it a lot. I met a lot of people, I reconnected with other swimmers and it was a great experience for me,” she said.

Backstroke and a Role Model

Barba specializes in backstroke, a style that suits her physical needs. She draws inspiration from fellow swimmer and compatriot Beatriz Lérida, who competed in the 2024 Paralympic Games. “I really like how she swims and for me she is an example that with effort I can reach the top, just like she did,” Barba stated. Lérida and her father, Juan Vicente, have provided significant support to Barba and her family.

Dreams of Representing Spain

While her ultimate goal is to represent Spain in major international competitions, Barba is focused on taking things one step at a time and enjoying the process. She also aspires to become a physiotherapist, hoping to facilitate others in the same way that professionals are currently helping her. José Carlos, Barba’s father, emphasizes that swimming is his daughter’s “true passion and motivation.” What began as therapy associated with her disability has evolved into a vital force in her life, allowing her to travel, make novel friends, and participate in training camps at high-performance centers. “As a father, it’s a source of pride to see how people rally around my daughter,” José Carlos said, adding his hope that swimming and sports can help children like Carla overcome obstacles and enjoy a better life.
