New Political Movements Emerge in Brno, Focusing on Housing and Football Stadium
Brno is seeing a surge in new political movements ahead of upcoming local elections, each with distinct platforms centered around key issues for the city’s residents. From addressing housing shortages to securing a new stadium for the FC Zbrojovka Brno football club, these groups are vying for influence in the city’s political landscape. The emergence of these movements follows internal divisions within established parties, notably within the ANO party, and reflects a growing desire for change among Brno’s electorate.
Fractures Within ANO Spark New Political Force
The “Brno klidem” (Brno with Calm) movement was formed around members recently expelled from ANO due to their refusal to withdraw from a coalition led by the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) following a bitcoin scandal. Karin Podivinská, the current Deputy Mayor, explained that the slogan “Brno klidem” emphasizes the importance of collaborative and peaceful progress for the city. Podivinská, a former member of ANO, is now heavily focused on addressing the city’s housing needs, specifically the construction of cooperative housing projects that have been stalled since 2018.
“We wish to show that Brno has moved forward in the last four years, with many investment projects launched, from the multifunctional hall to the Janáček Cultural Centre,” Podivinská stated, highlighting the accomplishments of the current administration. The city is currently seeking a contractor to begin construction on the first phase of housing development in the Kamenný vrch area.
Nové Brno Aims for Ambitious Infrastructure Projects
Another new movement, Nové Brno (New Brno), is led by Michal Sedláček, the former Director of the Office of the City Architect of Brno. Sedláček’s vision extends beyond housing, encompassing the construction of 5,000 new apartments, a new main railway station, and a modern stadium for FC Zbrojovka Brno. Sedláček, who has experience working in major cities like New York and Los Angeles, believes Brno has significant untapped potential.
“We require to start what has been delayed for a long time. We need fewer political agreements and more decisions that are actually implemented,” Sedláček emphasized. He argues that the city needs to stop hindering private construction projects to accelerate the development of new housing.
Fan-Driven Movement Pushes for Zbrojovka Stadium
The passion for football is likewise fueling political activity in Brno. A movement called “Za Lužánky” (For Lužánky) has emerged, directly linked to the supporters of FC Zbrojovka Brno. Their primary goal is to advocate for the construction of a new stadium for the club. Lukáš Winkler, the chairman of Za Lužánky, expressed frustration with the city’s approach to the stadium project.
“We are dismayed by how the city is approaching the construction of the stadium,” Winkler said. The movement is adopting a unique approach to campaigning, selling “virtual tickets” for the new stadium to raise funds and demonstrate public support. Winkler described the movement’s structure as a “squad” rather than a traditional political list, with a “captain” instead of a leader, reflecting a sporting terminology.
Private Investment Key to Stadium Development
Vojtěch Kačena, the new owner of FC Zbrojovka Brno, intends to finance the construction of the stadium privately. The city is currently conducting a concession process to select a winning bidder for the project. Sedláček has indicated a target date of 2029 for laying the foundation stone of the new railway station.
The emergence of these diverse political movements signals a dynamic shift in Brno’s political landscape. Each group brings a unique focus and approach, promising voters a range of options for the future direction of the city. The upcoming elections will be a crucial test of which vision resonates most with the citizens of Brno.
What’s Next: The city of Brno will continue the concession process for the new stadium, with a decision expected in the coming months. The movements are actively campaigning and seeking support from residents ahead of the local elections. Further updates on the housing projects and infrastructure plans will be released as the city progresses with its development initiatives.
