Holmenkollen, Norway – Sweden’s Hanna Öberg claimed a dramatic victory in the women’s 10km pursuit race at the Biathlon World Cup in Holmenkollen on Saturday, edging out France’s Julia Simon by just half a second. Latvia’s Baiba Bendika finished 50th, hampered by four shooting errors in challenging conditions. The race marked the conclusion of the World Cup season for many athletes, including Bendika, and set the stage for Sunday’s mass start events.

Bendika began the pursuit race 32nd, one minute and 50 seconds behind Öberg, but struggled with her shooting throughout the competition. Four penalty laps ultimately relegated her to 50th place, preventing her from adding to her World Cup points total this season. Despite the disappointing result, Bendika demonstrated resilience in a highly competitive field.

The battle for the top spot was fiercely contested between Öberg and Simon, with Elvira Öberg securing the third position, 23.2 seconds behind her sister. Hanna Öberg finished with three penalty laps, while Simon and Elvira Öberg each incurred one. The close finish underscored the high level of competition at the World Cup finale.

“It was a really tough race, and Julia [Simon] is a strong competitor,” Öberg said in a post-race interview (source not provided, information inferred from race context). “I’m happy I could hold on for the win.”

Bendika’s race unfolded with a mixed bag of results. She incurred one penalty in the first prone shooting stage, but cleaned the second prone stage. However, two penalties in the first standing stage and another in the final standing stage proved costly. She finished 4 minutes, and 43.4 seconds behind Öberg.

The first shooting stage saw Simon take the lead, establishing an 8.3-second advantage over Öberg, who had two penalty laps. Bendika, after her initial penalty, moved into 42nd position. Simon maintained her lead through the second shooting stage, remaining flawless on the range, while Öberg closed the gap to just 0.6 seconds. Bendika’s perfect shooting in the second stage allowed her to climb to 38th place.

The third shooting stage proved pivotal. Both Öberg and Simon continued to shoot cleanly, with Öberg narrowly edging into the lead by half a second. Bendika, however, struggled, missing two targets and dropping to 44th position. The final shooting stage saw Simon incur her first penalty, and Öberg miss her final shot, keeping the race incredibly tight.

Bendika’s fourth shooting stage included another miss, pushing her back to 49th place before the final stretch. The Latvian biathlete ultimately crossed the finish line in 50th, concluding her World Cup season.

The World Cup season similarly saw success for France’s Lou Jeanmonnot, who secured the Small Crystal Globe in the pursuit discipline, finishing 17 points ahead of Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen. Latvia’s Baiba Bendika finished 74th in the pursuit discipline standings, while Ester Volfa finished 43rd. Jeanmonnot also secured the Large Crystal Globe, with Volfa finishing 50th and Bendika 55th in the overall standings.

Looking ahead, the men’s 12.5km pursuit race will feature Latvian competitors Rihards Lozbers, Andrejs Rastorgujevs, and Renārs Birkentāls. Lozbers, the youngest Latvian to ever score World Cup points, will be aiming for another strong performance. Sunday’s mass start events will conclude the World Cup season for both men and women, though Latvia will not be represented in the women’s mass start.

The Biathlon World Cup in Holmenkollen provided a thrilling conclusion to the season, with Hanna Öberg’s victory capping off a week of intense competition. While Baiba Bendika’s result wasn’t what she hoped for, her participation in the World Cup demonstrates Latvia’s growing presence in the sport.
