The weekend’s competition saw Jörg Bernauer, 59, competing in the Master Class of the German Championships in Berlin on Friday. He delivered a strong performance in the compound bow division, tying with Thomas Hasenfuß of SV Querum in the first round with a score of 291. While Hasenfuß ultimately claimed the gold medal with a total of 584 points, Bernauer secured a silver medal with a score of 578 – his best result of the year.
Sunday brought the Para-Archery Championships in Gera, where the Bernauers truly shone. Despite a grueling travel schedule – 1400 kilometers on the road over the weekend – Jörg Bernauer maintained focus and secured a start-to-finish victory in the Senioren A age group. After the first round, he led his competitor, Miguel Roche of Bowteam Nordhausen, by a single ring with a score of 281. Bernauer then improved his score in the second round, shooting 284 and finishing with a total of 565 to defend his title as German Para-Champion in his age class. His performance included 25 arrows hitting the gold and 35 hitting the nine ring.
Miklas-Cassian Bernauer, 16, also delivered a dominant performance in the youth division of the Para-Championships. He started with a score of 272 in the first round, enough to accept the lead in his category. However, it was his second round that truly impressed, as he shot a sensational 286, surpassing even his father’s score. With a total of 558, Miklas-Cassian secured his second consecutive German Para-Championship title in the youth division, hitting the ten ring 23 times and the nine ring 32 times.
The Bernauers’ success isn’t simply a recent phenomenon. They’ve been consistently racking up accolades, demonstrating a dedication to their sport and a remarkable synergy as a father-son team. In 2025, the duo combined to win an impressive 20 medals – 14 gold, four silver, and two bronze – across Kreis-, Landes-, and Deutsche Meisterschaften. Their training regimen is rigorous, with four sessions per week split between SV Todenmann and SV Loccum. They train on Thursdays and Sundays in Todenmann, and Tuesdays and Saturdays in Loccum.
Their achievements extend beyond para-archery as well. Both Jörg and Miklas-Cassian qualified for the German Championships in Chemnitz as Landesmeister (state champions). Miklas-Cassian secured a bronze medal there, while Jörg finished fifth. This continued success highlights the depth of talent within the SV Todenmann and the Niedersächsischen Sportschützenverbandes (NSSV) – Lower Saxony Shooting Association – and the Deutschen Bogensport Verband (DBSV) – German Archery Federation.
