Badminton: 14-Year-Old Wins Big at Thetford Mines Elite Tournament | Quebec News

Thetford Mines, Quebec – A new benchmark for badminton in the region was set this past weekend as the Élite ABC circuit tournament, sanctioned by Badminton Québec, drew nearly 200 athletes to Thetford Mines on March 14th and 15th. The event, a collaboration between Les Filons badminton and Polyvalente de Thetford Mines, showcased some of the best players from Quebec, Canada, and the United States.

The tournament wasn’t just a display of established talent; it also served as a launching pad for a rising star. Fourteen-year-old Andy Zeng delivered a stunning upset, defeating Zachary Desjardins, currently ranked third in Canada’s senior division. The victory, according to tournament co-organizer Jean Boissonneault, underscored the exceptional level of competition achieved at the event. “This result demonstrates the exceptional level of competition achieved,” Boissonneault stated.

The competition wasn’t limited to out-of-town players. Several local athletes also made their mark. Catherine Letarte, co-organizer and coach for Les Filons, and Sammie Pang reached the semi-finals in Women’s Double A. Xavier Lavoie, also representing Les Filons, advanced to the round of sixteen in Men’s Single C. Boissonneault himself competed, reaching the quarter-finals of the C consolation bracket in singles and the semi-finals in doubles alongside Mathis Vuillaume.

This tournament marked a first for the region, bringing a high-caliber badminton competition to Thetford Mines for the first time. “It’s a first for the region to have such a high-level competition,” Boissonneault explained prior to the tournament. “The tournament is sanctioned and counts towards the Canadian rankings. We have several players in the top 20, so the level is very high.” The effort to attract a championship of this caliber had been underway for some time, fueled by improving facilities and growing interest from Badminton Québec.

The success of the event was also reflected in the financial rewards distributed. Nearly $5,000 in prize money and gifts were awarded to the finalists, recognizing their achievements and dedication. Organizers extended their gratitude to Cégep de Thetford and Polyvalente de Thetford Mines for their collaboration, as well as the essential contributions of volunteers and sponsors.

The emergence of young talent like Andy Zeng is particularly noteworthy. His victory over a seasoned player like Desjardins signals a promising future for Canadian badminton. The tournament’s success also highlights the growing accessibility of the sport in Quebec, with improved facilities and increased support from organizations like Badminton Québec fostering a competitive environment.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the tournament served as a valuable opportunity for athletes to gain experience and exposure. The presence of players from across North America contributed to a diverse and challenging field, pushing competitors to elevate their game. The event’s organizers hope to build on this momentum and continue to attract high-level badminton competitions to Thetford Mines in the years to come.

Badminton Québec also recently recognized athletes Andy Zeng and Victor Ma for their representation of the Rive-Sud region at the Quebec Games in Blainville. A Facebook post from Badminton Québec highlighted the achievement of these 14-year-old competitors.

Looking ahead, the focus for many of these athletes will now shift to upcoming national and international competitions. The Élite ABC circuit serves as a crucial stepping stone for players aiming to represent Canada on the world stage. The success of this tournament in Thetford Mines demonstrates the potential for growth and development within the Canadian badminton community.

The next major event on the Badminton Québec calendar is yet to be announced, but updates and information can be found on their official Facebook page and Instagram account.
