Lamezia Terme, Italy – A vibrant display of athleticism and community spirit unfolded in Calabria this past weekend as Lamezia Terme successfully hosted a stage of the national Baddy Cup, a tournament promoted by the Italian Badminton Federation (FIBa). The event, coordinated by Tycke Sport ESD for badminton and Lucky Friends for parabadminton, underscored a growing synergy for sporting excellence in the region.
The competition took place as part of the national “Vola con Noi” (Fly With Us) project, a collaborative effort involving the IC Ardito-Don Bosco school, FIBa, Tycke Sport, and Sport e Salute. The atmosphere was electric, with families, students, and teachers providing enthusiastic support for the competing athletes.
This year’s Baddy Cup wasn’t just about competition; it was a powerful demonstration of inclusivity. The event organizers intentionally fostered an environment where athletes of diverse nationalities and abilities could come together through their shared passion for badminton. A particularly touching example highlighted by organizers was the dedication of athletes from Crotone, who travel by train twice a week, equipment in tow, simply to participate in training and competition with the Lamezia group. “We don’t do integration, we play together with anyone who loves badminton. We are a community without borders that will not stop here,” organizers stated.
The success of the event is a testament to the dedication of a team of professionals and volunteers. Domenico Lachimea, Technical Director of Lucky Friends, served as the Competition Director. Orlando Vescio, a Maestro of Mousikè APS, curated the artistic direction, while Pasquale Cimino, President of Tycke Sport, guided the ESD Tutor program. Giovanna Campisano, a Coach Ludico Sportiva, was a cornerstone of the volunteer efforts, and Pasqualino Raso, a Federal Technician and FIBa project manager, oversaw the SuperAbilities and Sport for Cohesion initiatives (Sport for All in Juvenile Prisons 2024/2026).
The Baddy Cup saw success across multiple categories. In the parabadminton division, Federico Fazio of Lucky Friends ASD emerged victorious. Shahriar Raman claimed the title in the Agonisti Athletes category representing Tycke Sport. Within the IC Ardito-Don Bosco school system, Melissa De Sensi won the Women’s Singles title, and Pietro Perri took home the Men’s Singles crown.
Tycke Sport’s commitment extends beyond the court. The organization is actively involved in social initiatives, including activities at the IPM (Juvenile Penitentiary Institute) in Catanzaro, with a new event planned for minors as part of the “Sport for Cohesion” program. The recently awarded “SuperAbilities” project, funded by the Calabria Region, will further strengthen the connection between sport and overcoming barriers to participation.
Currently, the movement boasts 82 active athletes, a significant number reflecting the growing popularity of badminton in the region. Tycke Sport APD/ESD and Lucky Friends ASD expressed their gratitude to the school administration, teachers, and families for their support. They also extended a special commendation to the athletes of Don Bosco, emphasizing that defeat is not a limitation but a starting point for growth.
The event highlights the growing impact of Tycke Sport ESD, which has been dedicated to serving badminton and sport in the region since 2014. The organization’s approach emphasizes not just athletic development, but also community building and social inclusion.
Badminton, once a niche sport in Italy, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, fueled by events like the Baddy Cup and the dedication of organizations like Tycke Sport and Lucky Friends. The success in Lamezia Terme demonstrates the power of sport to unite communities and provide opportunities for all.
Looking ahead, Tycke Sport will continue its social commitment through activities at the IPM in Catanzaro, with a new event planned for minors under the “Sport for Cohesion” initiative. The “SuperAbilities” project, recently awarded by the Calabria Region, promises to further strengthen the link between sport and overcoming barriers.
The next confirmed checkpoint for Tycke Sport and Lucky Friends is the upcoming event at the IPM in Catanzaro, details of which will be announced shortly. Stay tuned to their official channels for updates.
