INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant start to the 2026 season, powering past Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday. The victory extends the world No. 1’s winning streak to 13 matches, while Novak Djokovic overcame a slow start to defeat Kamil Majchrzak and advance to the third round of the prestigious Masters 1000 tournament. The stage is potentially set for a rematch between Alcaraz and Djokovic in the semi-finals, a little over a month after their epic Australian Open final.
Alcaraz, playing in one of his favorite tournaments, made short perform of Dimitrov, a former world No. 3, winning 6-2, 6-3 in just 66 minutes. The Spaniard’s flawless form has been a hallmark of 2026, with titles already secured in Doha and Melbourne. His Australian Open triumph made him the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam, a remarkable achievement at just 22 years old.
“With the wind today, it was even more difficult, but I think I adapted my game better than he did and that’s why I took the match,” Alcaraz said after the win. He outpaced Dimitrov in winners (20 to 10) and committed fewer unforced errors (14 to 16), demonstrating his control and precision on the court.
Alcaraz will next face France’s Arthur Rinderknech in the third round. Rinderknech advanced without playing, receiving a walkover due to an injury to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.
Djokovic, a five-time Indian Wells champion, faced a tougher challenge against Majchrzak. The Serbian dropped the first set 4-6 but battled back to secure a 6-1, 6-2 victory in a match that lasted over two hours. This win was crucial for Djokovic, who is seeking to end a decade-long title drought at the tournament.
“This is one of the most difficult places to win, with the wind coming and going, in different angles, it puts extra tension,” Djokovic acknowledged. “It was a physical and mental battle.”
Djokovic will next play American Aleksandar Kovacevic, ranked No. 72 in the world, in the third round. The veteran is hoping to recapture the form that saw him dominate Indian Wells in years past, sharing the tournament record of five titles with Roger Federer.
The Serbian expressed admiration for Alcaraz’s current form, stating, “He can do it. He has everything that you necessitate in terms of the game, in terms of adaptability to different surfaces, and the level of fitness and recovery that he has shown and matured over the years.” Djokovic added, “He’s so good that he can win any tournament he plays.”
Beyond the top seeds, Saturday also saw impressive performances from emerging talents. Brazil’s João Fonseca, 19, secured his first third-round appearance at Indian Wells with a thrilling comeback victory over Karen Khachanov. Fonseca saved two match points during a tense tiebreak in the second set, ultimately winning 4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4 against the former US Open and Australian Open semi-finalist.
“I’m very happy with the way I fought,” Fonseca said, reflecting on his resilience. “It gives me a lot of confidence because the first few months of the season were difficult coming back from an injury.”
Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo, the top-ranked South American player, also advanced, defeating Benjamin Bonzi of France 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7/5) after another hard-fought tiebreak. Cerúndolo will face defending champion Jack Draper in the next round.
Another Argentine, Sebastián Báez, scored an upset victory over Jiří Lehečka of the Czech Republic, winning 6-4, 6-1. Báez will next face former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Alejandro Tabilo of Chile 6-4, 6-2.
The BNP Paribas Open continues to deliver compelling action as the top players battle for supremacy in the California desert. Alcaraz’s relentless form and Djokovic’s hard-fought victory set the stage for a potentially captivating semi-final showdown, while the emergence of young stars like Fonseca adds an exciting dynamic to the tournament.
Next up for Alcaraz and Djokovic are their respective third-round matches, with both players aiming to continue their winning ways and inch closer to a championship clash. Fans can follow live updates and scores on the official ATP Tour website and through various sports news outlets.
