Stan Wawrinka (ATP 113) is in the round of 16 at the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier (FRA). In his opening game, Romand prevailed against Hamad Medjedovic (ATP 80), who is 18 years his junior. He beat his opponent 7:6, 6:4.
In the opening set, the 40-year-old, who also competed in the south of France with a wildcard, fended off all three break chances without earning one for himself. In the subsequent tiebreak he retained the upper hand 7:3. In round number two, Wawrinka got the breaks to make it 2:1 and 4:1. Even though he had to give up his serve again, the lead was enough for victory in the end. After 1:41 hours, Wawrinka used his first match point.
Now it’s time for the premiere duel
In the round of 16, Wawrinka, who is completing his farewell season, will face the top seed and defending champion Félix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 8). The 25-year-old Canadian benefited from a bye at the start. The two have never met on the tour.
