Van Aert Training Crash: Update & Team Response

Wout van Aert has been at Sierra Nevada for an altitude internship for a few days. The winter weather makes it difficult to train outside.

On Wednesday, Van Aert flew to southern Spain to do an altitude training camp in the Sierra Nevada for about three weeks. Normally Visma-Lease a Bike goes to Tenerife, but this year the Dutch team wanted to do something different.

Does Van Aert beat Sierra Nevada again?

It will be around 19 degrees in Tenerife in the coming days, it will snow in the Sierra Nevada this weekend and next week the temperature will barely rise above 10 degrees. So a big difference.

On Thursday, Van Aert completed two training sessions on the rollers, and on Friday he was able to train outside for about four hours. Uno-X has been at Sierra Nevada for the past three weeks, they were only able to train outside five times.

There are also advantages to training on rollers

This is what Belgian sports director Gino Van Oudenhove says The Newspaper. “The trick is to see the positive side of it. Otherwise it will indeed destroy you.” Although training on the rollers does not have to be a disaster for Van Aert.

It is very controllable and the trainers can take measurements much better. And you can train at height on the rollers, but outside it is more likely to be in the valley. “You are still in a very favorable environment,” Van Oudenhove concludes.
