EU wants to better help border regions near Russia
In order to provide greater support to the eastern EU regions on the borders with Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, the EU Commission wants them to have easier access to money. In addition, action is to be taken against emigration and labor shortages in the corresponding regions in nine EU member states. This emerges from a strategy presented by the authority in Brussels.
Strengthening the prosperity and resilience of these regions is not only an expression of EU solidarity after the Russian attack on Ukraine, “but also a strategic investment in Europe’s security, competitiveness and future stability,” it said.
The corresponding regions geographically close to Russia, Belarus or Ukraine in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria are particularly badly affected by indirect attacks, targeted migration, economic problems and population decline.
