FC Porto faces a notable defensive puzzle at left-back ahead of their fixture against Moreirense, as squad constraints and international duty force manager Francesco Farioli to weigh up alternative options for the position, according to reports from A Bola and Bola na Rede.
Francisco Moura stands as the only natural left-back currently available in the senior squad at the Estádio do Dragão. However, his usual backup, Zaidu Sanusi, is currently away on international duty representing Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), leaving the Dragons short of specialized depth on the left side of defense.
With Zaidu unavailable, Farioli must look to tactical adaptations within his current roster or turn to the club’s youth ranks. Several plausible solutions emerge from the squad mix, balancing youth development with tactical stability.
Defensive Adaptations and Senior Alternatives
Among the primary alternatives within the senior setup are players who can be shifted from their usual roles. Martim Fernandes, predominantly a right-back, has previous experience playing on the left and has logged 15 appearances alongside one assist across all competitions this season. At just 19 years old, the young prospect provides an energetic option, though he faces strong competition from Alberto Costa, a Portuguese defender who arrived from Juventus and has earned the coaching staff’s trust.
Another option in the defensive line is Jakub Kiwior. While the central defender is capable of operating at left-back—having recorded 16 appearances and one assist in the 2025/26 campaign—deploying the Poland international out wide would require shifting a pillar from the central axis of the defense.
Farioli could also dip into the club’s B team for reinforcements. Kaio Henrique, a 19-year-old Brazilian who is in his second season with the blue-and-whites, serves as the regular left-back for coach João Brandão. Another promising young name, 18-year-old Martim Cunha, would have been a natural candidate after making his B-team debut during the 2024/25 season, but he is currently sidelined while recovering from a right knee meniscus injury.
Next Steps for the Squad
As preparations continue for the clash against Moreirense, Farioli and his technical staff will finalize their tactical blueprint to cover the left flank.
