Track & Field: Records Fall at Season Start

Track and field athletes start the year with records

The year has just started, but the first records have already fallen – both in Jelgava and in Latvia.

Jelgava Children’s and Youth Sports School, Jelgava Athletics Club and Murjaņi Sports Gymnasium student Emilija Braun (pictured) broke Jelgava’s long jump record in the U-18, U-20 and women’s group in the competition at the “Valka-Valga” premises. The new record is 6.10 meters, beating the previous record by 1 centimeter.

It should be emphasized that until March, athletics competitions are held indoors. “In most disciplines, the results are not divided according to whether the competition takes place indoors or in the stadium. Long jump is one such discipline, so Emilija’s result is a new Jelgava record,” explains athletics coach Alona Fomenko.

However, there are also disciplines – all running disciplines – in which indoor and stadium results are judged separately. At the beginning of this year, Jelgava Athletics Club representative Emīlija Vīksna showed a result of 56.17 seconds in the 400-meter distance, which is a new Latvian indoor record in the U-18 age group. Following the practice introduced by the Latvian Athletics Union, indoor records will also be included in Jelgava’s table of records separately from this year. “The table of Jelgava athletics records with indoor results is planned to be supplemented after the end of the indoor season in March, collecting the best results of Jelgava athletics in all age groups,” says A. Fomenko.

It should be reminded that the year 2025 was also full of records for Jelgava’s track and field athletes, breaking both city and Latvian records. Three of our athletes – E. Brauna, E. Vīksna and Alise Blaua – were awarded the “Award of the Year in Athletics” of the Latvian Athletics Union, because they broke the Latvian record last year. As part of the Latvian national team, E. Brauna broke the Latvian record in the 4×100 meter relay in the U-18 age group, E. Vīksna, as part of the Latvian national team, broke the Latvian record in the Swedish relay in the U-18 and U-20 age groups, A. Blaua broke four records in the U-16 age group – in the 100-meter hurdles, 60-meter hurdles, long jump and pentathlon.
