His first game in the Bundesliga: New coach Daniel Thioune (51) is looking forward to his debut at Werder Bremen. “It’s something special,” said Thioune before the game at SC Freiburg (Saturday, 3:30 p.m./Sky): “I was never driven by this dream, but rather I always worked persistently on it and for it. And of course it’s part of my happiness in life now to be able to make it come true on Saturday.” As a player and coach, Thioune had not yet made it beyond the second division.

Werder signed Thioune on Wednesday as Horst Steffen’s successor, the mission is clear: save the Hanseatic League from the third relegation in the club’s history. The traditional club has slipped to 15th place in the table and has been without a win in ten Bundesliga games, longer than ever since promotion in 2022 and longer than any other Bundesliga team currently.
“I’m a coach, I’m not a magician,” said Thioune about his short preparation time: “Three days won’t be enough to influence everything.” After the game against Freiburg, Werder will host Bayern Munich at home a week later.
