This match will be remembered for a while. STVV saw its progress stopped in the game of revelations against Charleroi. A red card after a questionable phase was the beginning of the end for Wouter Vrancken’s team, who remained extremely competitive against Charleroi with ten. And so STVV loses first place in the rankings.
STVV – Charleroi in a nutshell:
- Key moment
Shortly before half time, STVV suddenly finds itself with one man less after the exclusion of Muja. The Kosovar makes a frustrated tackle on Keita, after referee Verbeke had left a foul on Yamamoto unpunished. On the advice of the VAR, yellow turns red and STVV has to continue with one man less for more than half. The entire phase started with hands from Ito, but that also went unpunished.
- Man of the match
With one man down, STVV actually came close to the opening goal on the hour mark, but Taniguchi’s header hit the post. Barely a few minutes later the goal was scored on the other side when Titraoui scored with a wonderful goal. He broke the spell for the visitors and paved the way for a fourth victory in a row.
- Remarkable
Charleroi is only the third team that has managed to beat STVV at home this season, only Westerlo and Racing Genk were also able to take full advantage of Stayen. Since that defeat in the Limburg derby at the end of September, STVV has been undefeated for six home games in a row.
- Statistics
Hans Cornelis and Charleroi, it remains a match made in heaven for the time being. Charleroi is now unbeaten in the competition for six games in a row and has also knocked Club Brugge out of the cup in between.
Uncalled handball results in ejection
With STVV and Charleroi, two in-form teams faced each other. Two teams that were on a strong, undefeated run. All the ingredients were there for a fun game of football and both teams went for it.
This did not result in much concrete target danger. Charleroi started best, but STVV quickly restored the balance. Muja should have done better after a well-played switch, it turned out to be the harbinger of an unhappy evening for the Kosovar.
Because ten minutes before half time the puppets suddenly started dancing. After an unnoticed handball from Ito, Yamamoto was able to push through, but he was also tackled unpunished by Titraoui.
Muja then intervened to paralyze Charleroi’s counter. His hard tackle on Keita initially only resulted in a yellow card, but after the intervention of the VAR it was rightly red.
Yet the home team immediately came close to the opening goal after good interplay between Sissako, Ito and Goto. Competition goal number 9 seemed to be in the making for the Anderlecht mercenary, but Delavallée parried. On the other side, Kokubo risked life and limb to keep Titraoui from scoring the opening goal.
Titraoui breaks the spell with a nice shot
Shortly after half-time it was almost ten against ten again, but Camara escaped a second yellow card. Disappointing for STVV, but despite the numerical disadvantage on the hour mark, it still came close to the opening goal. On a corner from Ito, Taniguchi’s excellent header hit the post.
A few minutes later there was another big setback for the home team. After a short corner kick, the ball reached Titraoui and from the half moon he pushed the ball untenably into the intersection. A great goal that left STVV orphaned.
Fifteen minutes before the end, Romsaas wanted to bring the match into a decisive fold with a dangerous long shot. STVV goalkeeper Kokubo decided differently with a great save.
It turned out to be only a delay, because ten minutes later Romsaas turned off the lights. Colassin beautifully plucked the ball out of the air and had some luck with the assist, Kokubo was left defeated by Romsaas’ shot.
The fairy tale of Hans Cornelis near Charleroi continues like this. The Hainauts can go to the semi-finals of the cup with confidence, where they will receive national champion Union on Wednesday. STVV misses the opportunity to take the lead and knows what losing is like after a good 12 out of 12.

Vanwesemael: “We shouldn’t worry”
- Robert-Jan Vanwesemael (STVV): “How do I feel? Disappointed. There was certainly a lot more to it, both with eleven against eleven and with ten against eleven. We went down with honor. In the second half we even had the best chances, but then you have to take them. We conceded one chance and it was a goal straight away. It’s a shame, but we did fight and we can be happy with that. The exclusion? I think it was a red card, but I think it was a mistake on Yamamoto beforehand. I hope they We also said to each other at halftime that it was still 0-0 and that we still had 45 minutes to turn the game around. We just looked at it week by week. We wanted to win this match and that was certainly the case We know where we will end up. There is nothing wrong, we should not worry. We were the better team. We have to put our heads together and everything will be fine.”
- Jakob Romsaas (Charleroi): “It wasn’t the prettiest goal, but it was nice to finally score. It was clearly a match with two teams in top form. Winning here again after four wins in a row, it only ensures that the team spirit continues to improve. We feel very good now. Next week there is that important cup match against Union, we are all looking forward to it. We have a lot of confidence and we are playing good football.”
End
Another victory for Hans Cornelis and Charleroi. The Hainauts made the difference in the second half against a ten-man STVV with goals from Titraoui and Romsaas and thus jump into the top six for the time being. Charleroi is also gaining confidence for next Wednesday’s cup match against Union. After a 12 out of 12, STVV knows what losing is again.
Place ball Merlen next to it!
Still a pinprick from STVV! Diouf puts the ball backwards to Merlen and he delivers a clever place ball. Delavallée is beaten, but sees the shot go narrowly wide.
An extra 6 minutes will be added.
Cornelis’ fairy tale continues
STVV is hanging on the ropes and, after a 12 out of 12, is heading for its first loss since mid-December. Charleroi continues the gradually impressive undefeated series under Hans Cornelis.
Romsaas decides the match!
Fifteen minutes before the end, Kokubo kept him from 0-2, but now Romsaas has scored. Colassin plucks the ball nicely out of the air and then provides a stroke of luck and an assist for Romsaas. He does not hesitate and now leaves Kokubo defeated.
Matsuzawa still comes between the lines at STVV. The match is over for Goto.
Guiagon, who played a rather pale match tonight, and Pflücke are leaving for Charleroi. Colassin and Boukamir are their replacements.
Yellow for Goto
Goto pushes hard at Delavallée on a kick from the goalkeeper. He arrives too late and rightly gets a yellow card. Delavallée needs care.
Merlen can complete the final phase at STVV. He takes Sissako’s place.
Charleroi virtually in the top six
Charleroi is currently sixth in the standings and is temporarily pushing KV Mechelen out of the coveted top six. KV Mechelen will play against OH Leuven tomorrow evening.
Charleroi wants to make the match decisive, but that is beyond Kokubo’s calculations. The Truiense goalkeeper made an excellent save on a long shot from Romsaas.
There’s Diouf
Diouf was the match winner for STVV last week with the late winning goal against La Louvière. Can he now make a difference again? He takes Ito’s place.
