The usual Trieste Basketball. The one that builds a decent lead, in this case 15 points in the second quarter but also at the beginning of the third (47-62) and then gets caught up and overcome. In Tortona the sensational, negative third quarter for the red and whites weighs heavily, as they conceded 39 points to the Piedmontese. It could have been a victory that would have put Trieste in a position to fight for the fifth place finish but instead it will perhaps have to fight to stay in the top eight.
Balanced first quarter, Tortona holds the lead until 11-9, Trieste extends to 13-20 before suffering a 6-0 from the home team. Toscano’s triple closes for 19-23 at the first break.
Trieste starts well in the second quarter, Ramsey from three: 19-26. Tortona remains in the wake: 24-28. Guests ahead on +10: 24-34. From 30-37 to 30-44 and 32-47. Trieste controls: 41-55 at half time.
The third quarter, as mentioned, is catastrophic. After 2′ of play the scoreboard read 47-62. In the remaining 8′ the score will be 32-17 with Hubb among the protagonists who will end the evening with 37 points. Last interval at 80-79.
The fourth quarter starts in a balanced manner, Trieste’s last lead is 86-88 with -7′ left. Tortona goes from 90-89 to 102-92 in three minutes. Trieste doesn’t give up, Ramsey scores, then two free throws by Brown and a triple by Uthoff: 102-99 at -1’14”. The locals score two free throws with Gorham at -57″: 104-99. Brooks misses from beyond the arc at -41″. It’s the surrender. Gonzalez’s team maintains the advantage in basket difference having won by 10 in the first leg, but catching up with Tortona, four points above, with this type of performance appears difficult.
