While AS Monaco Basket is in great financial difficulty, the National Basketball League (LNB) has provided monetary support to the club, rare and surprising for the Principality’s club.
The players had considered going on strike, but it ultimately did not take place. While the financial situation of AS Monaco Basket is critical, the Roca Team had threatened not to participate in the Betclic Élite match scheduled for this Sunday, February 8 (7 p.m.) in Chalon-sur-Saône. The Monegasque collective denounces in particular salary delays. The reason for these problems is that the Russian-Hungarian president of ASM Basket, Aleksej Fedorycsev, is having a difficult time. After investing nearly 100 million euros in Monegasque basketball, its cash flow was frozen by the conflict in Ukraine and debts accumulated as a result.
An observation which led the Principality to want to act by regaining control of the club. A desire confirmed by Prince Albert, interviewed on Saturday at the microphone of RMC Sport on the sidelines of the 2026 Winter Olympics: “It’s difficult. Discussions are still underway. I can’t tell you anything with certainty, at least for the moment. We will do everything to at least try to save the club’s season.”
Budgetary assistance
While waiting for the State to look into the club, the LNB wanted to provide its support. According to information from The Teamthe body advanced 500,000 euros, via the players’ union. This would then be responsible for redistributing the sum among the Monegasque workforce. The league justifies the maneuver by explaining that “the players are the first victims of the situation and the LNB has a duty of solidarity towards them at the same time as it must ensure as best as possible the fairness and continuity of the championship. In this context, we have actually proposed a mechanism which makes it possible to deal with the urgency of certain personal situations.”
On the ground, these obstacles are not yet felt. Monaco is at the top of the Betclic Elite ranking on the 19th day of the championship. The Principality club has only two defeats, for a victory rate of more than 80%.
