The Milan-Cortina Games could be the first time American athletes seriously experience that their home country is no longer seen as “the good guys,” according to Marr.
A clear example occurs on February 14. Then the USA and Denmark meet in ice hockey on the men’s side. The US still claims it plans to take control of Greenland, which is Danish territory.
Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, an expert on sports and international relations at Rice University, says that the American athletes are learning to notice a changed mood in the outside world.
– When they wear the flag and the costume and are advertised as the USA, it is of course an opportunity for the spectators to say what they think of the USA.
