This isn’t just about a few less-than-ideal snow days or a slightly warmer winter. The data is undeniable, and the impact is being felt directly on the ground, from the highest peaks to the foothills. For dedicated winter sports enthusiasts, especially here in the U.S. where we cherish our own snowy landscapes, this is a wake-up call we can’t afford to ignore.
The Alarming Drop in Alpine Snowfall
Let’s talk numbers, as they tell a chilling story. Since the 1980s,the Alps have seen a meaningful decrease in fresh snowfall. This trend is particularly pronounced on the southern slopes, wich include much of Italy’s iconic ski territory.We’re talking about a reduction of nearly 5% per decade in the southwest and around 3.8% in the northeastern italian and Slovenian sectors.
But the problem is far from new. Looking at historical data spanning a century (1920-2020), the average snowfall across the entire Alpine region has plummeted by a staggering 34%. Dig deeper, and the figures become even more alarming: a 49% decrease in the southwest, 38% in the southeast, and 23% in the north. Essentially, we’ve lost a third of our new snow, and in large parts of Northern Italy, it’s practically halved. This isn’t a gradual shift; it’s a dramatic contraction that has noticeably accelerated in the last 30 to 40 years.
Glaciers vanishing: A Visible Sign of a Warming World
The plight of Alpine glaciers serves as another stark visual indicator.since 1850, these majestic ice formations have lost an astounding 60% of their volume. And, much like the snowfall trends, this melting has intensified in the last two decades. In Switzerland alone, between 2022 and 2025, ice volume decreased by over 10% – a rate of loss that would have taken at least thirty years in the 20th century.
Think about it like this: imagine a star quarterback’s stats declining rapidly year after year. It’s a clear sign that something fundamental is changing. The same is happening with our snowpack and glaciers.
When Snow Was Plentiful: A Look Back
To truly grasp the magnitude of this change, let’s step away from the high-altitude slopes for a moment and consider the plains. Historical snow coverage maps from the period of 1921-1960 reveal a vastly different reality. During that era, areas in the central-western Po Valley (Valpadana) received an average of 8 to 20 inches of snow annually. Yes, you read that right – up to two feet of snow!
In the foothill regions of western Piedmont, northern Lombardy, and Emilia, snowfall could reach an incredible 20 to 40 inches. Even the plains of Veneto, Friuli, and Romagna weren’t left out, averaging 2 to 8 inches of snow per year. Today, these figures are a distant memory for many.
What this Means for Winter Sports and Beyond
The implications for winter sports are profound. Ski resorts, particularly those at lower altitudes, are facing shorter seasons, increased reliance on artificial snowmaking (which itself has environmental and economic costs), and a growing uncertainty for athletes and organizers alike. The very viability of some traditional winter sports destinations is now in question.
This isn’t just a European problem. While the alps are a critical case study, similar trends are being observed in mountain ranges worldwide, including our own Rockies and Sierras. The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association and othre governing bodies are undoubtedly monitoring these changes closely,as they directly impact training,competition,and the future of the sport.
Addressing the Challenge: A Call to Action

Still in the plains, the snow on the ground remained, on average, for 25 to 50 days in the middle-lower Piedmont, from 10 to 25 days in Lombardy and Emilia, and about ten in the rest of the Po Valley. You can easily imagine what the numbers were as soon as you entered mountain territory. We are so unaccustomed to snow that today a snowfall in the Alpine valleys or on the plains takes on the characteristics of an exceptional event. It was another world,literally.
The negative balance of recent decades becomes more acute below 1000 meters above sea level, where the effects linked to the increase in average temperature are more marked, which increasingly leads to liquid precipitation.
At altitudes above 1500 meters there is, at least for now, a more limited reduction in snow cover, thanks to the greater quantities of precipitation recorded during the winter season. It therefore means that, due to the gradual increase in temperatures, the locations located around 1000-1500 meters will tend to suffer more in the future compared to areas above 2000-2500 meters. What is happening today in the Apennine mountains and in the pre-Alpine area – where winter sports already fight for their sustainability every year now – will also happen in the heart of the Alps in the not so distant future.
ARTIFICIAL SNOW IS A PROBLEM
It’s not just Italy’s problem, obviously. The 2026 Winter Olympics,from this point of view,are part of a worrying context from a meteorological and climatic point of view,which puts at risk not only the future of winter sports but also that of the ecological systems on which humanity also depends. Sport in this sense helps us keep track of time: according to a study by the Balkans and Caucaso Transeuropa Observatory, compared to the last Winter Olympics hosted by Cortina, those in 1956, the average temperature of the mountain town has risen by more than three degrees.
Faced with this situation, artificial snow has for years now represented the only lifeline to guarantee the survival of winter sports. We had already seen it at the 2022 Beijing Games or even earlier at the 2014 Sochi games. But in reality there is no need to go that far, in time and space: just go to any of the ski resorts scattered across our territory. Without the support of snowmaking systems many ski resorts would have gone bankrupt years ago and many have already gone bankrupt Despite artificial snow. In Italy from 1970 to today, 311 plants have been decommissioned, of which 36 in the Veneto region alone.
Artificial snow, in this context, is in fact a palliative. If it’s too hot for the period, there’s no snow to hold. Artificial snow, then, in turn has an enormous impact on the environment, if we take into account the quantities of water consumed and the interventions carried out in the area, but also the energy necessary for the operation of the snow cannons. If natural snow had not occurred “in the Cesarini area”, all 2.4 million cubic meters of artificial snow estimated by the Organizing Committee would have been needed to guarantee snow on the slopes for the Olympics (equivalent to approximately 950 thousand cubic meters of water).
Creating artificial snow now seems like a normal, almost automatic expedient, whereas only a few decades ago it would have been unthinkable to have to resort to these measures with this regularity, particularly in the Alpine area.

From this point of view, it would be better to start reflecting quickly on how to adapt to this new reality (even if “new”, as we have seen, is not exactly the best term). It’s best not to have too many illusions. There are countless studies that demonstrate how much snow cover is in crisis both in the Apennines and in the Alps. Climate projections in this sense leave no room for doubts or hopes: the reduction in snow cover will continue, as will the anomalously hot conditions in mid-winter (last December the freezing point rose above 4000 meters several times) and subtropical summers.In the future, the environmental, energy and economic costs of supporting winter sport and tourism will be so high as to force a total paradigm shift. Wouldn’t it be better to act now to avoid losing everything tomorrow?
Rethinking our model of winter tourism and enjoyment of the mountains is increasingly becoming an imperative. At the moment mass tourism in the winter season is based on just one element: snow, an element which, as we have seen, will be increasingly rare and discontinuous.
It is indeed a reality that we have also seen reflected in the weeks that led us to these Olympics, with the distant exchange of words between the president of the international ski federation, concerned about the lack of snow and the failure of the snow cannons in Livigno (where the snowboard and freestyle competitions will take place) and the mayor of the town. But also with the alarm raised by various environmental organizations and some political leaders who have underlined the environmental unsustainability of this practice. The point is that the water used to produce artificial snow is actually a resource that is taken away from the dry season, which is now increasingly drier. The exceptional drought that hit the North in 2022 is still there to remind us of this.
For these reasons, if in the next few weeks a series of Atlantic disturbances lead to snowfall even on the Olympic slopes, it will be better to avoid falling into the facile rhetoric of “having made it this time too”. Here we are not just talking about the organization of an event, but about the survival of an entire tourism sector, if we really don’t want to think about the sustainability of the planet.
For now we remain faced with this paradox: even in the depths of winter, snow, a key element for the success of a sporting event in the heart of the Alps, is no longer a given. and therefore, no longer able to rely on what was once normality, we find ourselves hoping that the pieces of the meteorological puzzle will fit together so that the right disturbance arrives to save the situation. The very fact of being forced to rely on chance, however, tells us that the situation is already compromised and that there is no more time to waste.
