The long road towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics has begun, the International Olympic Committee has revealed the qualification criteria for the archery competitions which for the first time will also include the compound.
In total they will be 128 archers competing (64 men and 64 women) but, compared to Paris 2024, the medal events will be 6 and not 5, with the recurve events (individual men’s and women’s, men’s and women’s teams, mixed team) and the mixed team compound.
Of the 128 places available, those to be won through qualification will be 116, eight of which are in fact destined for the organizing country: the United States of America. The teams of curved they drop from 12 to 8 and compared to Paris it will not be possible to qualify with the positions in the world ranking. There will be a total of 12 mixed teams in the compound while there remain 28 individual places per gender. To be eligible, in the recurve you will need at least 650 points for men and 620 for women in the ranking rounds, while for the compound the scores are 690 for men and 670 for women.
The beginning of qualifying matches the next Olympics is expected in 2027 and there will be many cards that will be awarded at the World Championships in Medellin in Colombia. The top three teams in the men’s and women’s recurve and the top 3 in the mixed team compound will fly to Los Angeles. The pass will also be guaranteed for the continental champion teams, in the case of Italy, the blue men and women will therefore have to win gold at the European Championships both in the recurve teams and in the mixed team compound competition, if they fail to get a ticket to the World Championships. The last opportunity for qualifications will be in the pre-Olympic tournament which will be organized close to the start of the Olympics with a place up for grabs only for those who win the team competitions in recurve and mixed team compound. Finally, the two mixed teams best placed in the world ranking will also qualify in the compound division.
As far as I’m concerned pass individuali, which will go to those who have not achieved the goal with the team, 3 places are available for the athletes with the highest ranking of those not qualified after the World Championships, 5 places will be for the champions of the mixed teams at the European Championships who will also assign two places in the individual competitions. Finally, the last 14 places, 10 of which will qualify through other international competitions which will count as Olympic qualification, another 2 passes will be for those who win the individual challenges of the Olympic tournament, and finally 2 will fly to Los Angeles by invitation.
