German judo delegates have voted unanimously to advance plans for a Judo Grand Prix starting in 2027 in Düsseldorf, following a controversial discussion according to a general assembly report from the German Judo Federation (Deutscher Judo-Bund). The decision follows controversial discussions among members over hosting the international tournament. Whether the event ultimately arrives in Germany depends on subsequent negotiations with the International Judo Federation and securing financial subsidies from federal and state governments.
Unanimous Delegate Vote Advances 2027 Düsseldorf Bid
The path forward for the Düsseldorf bid required unanimous agreement after initial debates revealed division among assembly delegates. DJB Thomas Schynol outlined months of political talks leading up to the vote, highlighting the national federation’s ongoing outreach. Securing the event remains contingent on final agreements with the IJF alongside public funding commitments from federal and state budgets.
Financial Surplus and Strategy 2032 Updates
DJB board member Johannes Karsch reported a positive fiscal year-end balance, attributing the surplus to a combination of cost-cutting measures within elite sports and general price increases. Karsch also updated the membership on the progress of Strategy 2032. On the grassroots side, the nationwide “Tag of Judo” initiative drew participation from more than 100 clubs across the country.

Marketing and partnerships operations were presented by staff member Jan Günther. Meanwhile, newly appointed high-performance board director Miryam Roper shared her strategic vision, delivering an overview detailing the true financial cost of securing an international medal.
Executive Elections and Honored Members
Timo Cavelius was confirmed as the athlete representative within the DJB presidium. In an additional election, Viola Alves, formerly known as Wächter, was chosen as the new vice president of high performance.

The assembly opened by recognizing several veteran figures within the sport. High-ranking dan promotions went to Ralf Lippmann (8th Dan), Gerd Lamsfuß (7th Dan), Klaus Richter (7th Dan), and Stephan Steigmann (7th Dan). Gold pins of honor were awarded to Michaela Engelmeier and Frank Wieneke, while silver pins went to René Andreis, Ervin Susnik, and Stefan Teucher.
