KV Mechelen Stuns Antwerp in Thrilling Home victory: A Tactical Masterclass or a Stroke of Luck?
Antwerp, Belgium – In a match that had fans on the edge of their seats, KV Mechelen secured a crucial home win against royal antwerp, marking their first victory over “The Great Old” at home since the opening day of the 2021-2022 season. this hard-fought 1-0 triumph not only ends a three-season drought but also significantly bolsters KV Mechelen’s aspirations for a top-six finish in the league. But was this a testament to tactical brilliance,or did a moment of defensive lapse from Antwerp pave the way for this memorable result?
For KV Mechelen, this win is more than just three points; it’s a statement. After a string of disappointing results as mid-December, the pressure was on to deliver for their home crowd. And deliver they did, with an early goal that set the tone for the entire match.
A Corner Kick Gone Wrong: the Unforeseen Catalyst
The decisive moment arrived just ten minutes into the game, and ironically, it stemmed from a failed set-piece attempt by the visitors. Antwerp, clearly practicing a rehearsed corner kick routine, saw their plan unravel when a misplaced pass by Janssen gifted possession back to KV Mechelen. What followed was a swift and clinical counter-attack, orchestrated by a brilliant pass from Marsa van Brederode Myron, who then coolly slotted home the opener.
this sequence of events is a stark reminder of how quickly momentum can shift in football. It’s akin to a basketball team fumbling a fast break after a missed free throw, leading to an easy layup for the opposition. For Antwerp, it was a self-inflicted wound, a moment of sloppiness that proved incredibly costly.
holding Firm: A Defensive Masterclass or Antwerp’s Inability to Capitalize?
While KV Mechelen celebrated their early lead, the rest of the first half saw them unable to build on their advantage. Though, they managed to stifle any significant threats from Antwerp, keeping their opponents at bay. The closest Antwerp came to equalizing before halftime was through Tsunashima, whose goal was controversially disallowed for a handball.
This raises an interesting question: Did KV Mechelen’s defense deserve credit for their resilience, or did Antwerp simply fail to impose themselves effectively after the early setback? From a tactical outlook, KV Mechelen’s ability to absorb pressure and maintain their shape after taking the lead is commendable. It suggests a well-drilled unit capable of grinding out results.
However, for a team with Antwerp’s pedigree, failing to create clear-cut chances and relying on a disallowed goal for their best opportunity is a concern. This could point to a lack of attacking creativity or perhaps an over-reliance on individual brilliance that wasn’t on display.
looking Ahead: What Does this Mean for the Top Six Race?
This victory is a massive boost for KV Mechelen in their pursuit of a top-six finish. it injects much-needed confidence and demonstrates their potential to compete against the league’s stronger teams. For American sports fans, think of it like a mid-season surge from an underdog NBA team that suddenly finds its rhythm, making a playoff push seem plausible.
Antwerp, on the other hand, will be left to rue this missed opportunity. They will need to analyze what went wrong, particularly in their offensive execution and their response to conceding the early goal. The league is tight, and dropped points like these can be challenging to recover.
Potential Areas for Further Inquiry:
* KV Mechelen’s Home Advantage: Is there a discernible pattern to their home form? Do they play with a different intensity in front of their own supporters?
* Antwerp’s Set-Piece Strategy: Was the failed corner a one-off,or is there a vulnerability in their set-piece routines that opponents can exploit?
* Individual Performances: Beyond the goalscorer, which KV Mechelen players were instrumental in their defensive solidity? Conversely, where did Antwerp’s key attackers fall short?
This match serves as a compelling narrative in the ongoing Belgian league season. KV Mechelen has proven they can deliver under pressure, while Antwerp has been handed a valuable lesson. As the season progresses, the ability of both teams to adapt and learn from moments like these will undoubtedly shape their final standings.

Two counters, two goals
Antwerp immediately took control in the second half. Miras was soon tested on a shot from Scott and was only able to prevent Vincent janssen’s comeback.
Antwerp did not create many opportunities with the ball and twenty minutes into the second half the visitors were denied again on a sharp counter. Van Brederode sent Vanrafelghem deep and face to face with Nozawa, he finished it off with control: 2-0.
Antwerp tried to fight its way into the match, but KV Mechelen gave very little away. If that did happen, Miras would stand firm. The goalkeeper only had to really show his skills once on a dangerous breakaway shot from Babadi.
KV Mechelen takes victory again after a measly 3 out of 15 and jumps over charleroi and KAA Gent into the top six again. With its third defeat in four games, Antwerp misses another opportunity in the fight for the Champions’ Play-offs.
Oosting: “We still have it in our own hands”
- Joseph Oosting (trainer Antwerp): “Two oversights on our part decided the match in KV Mechelen’s favor. With that first goal, we lost the ball very easily at the front and then you saw that we were behind the times the entire match. I thought we had the ball well, but in the final phase we could have done better. In the second half we lost the ball again, whether or not it was offside, and they finished it mercilessly again. We did everything we could to score the tying goal, but unfortunately that was not the case. It may sound strange, but with the ball this was perhaps our best game. you just don’t buy anything for that. It’s about what you do with the ball to create opportunities and score, we failed to do that. We are three points behind in sixth place, so we still have everything in our own hands.
- Fred Vanderbiest (coach KV Mechelen): “I am proud of the players, because we were missing two boys today and had to make substitutions during the match due to all kinds of minor ailments. You then have to bring in boys who have not played much this season. To get this match over the line in this way, you can only be proud. We did very well defensively, offensively we took our moments and scored two great goals. If we were a little clearer in the last decision we could have scored one or two more. There was a lot of discipline and a great work ethic today, otherwise you can’t win these games. the boys have also grown enormously in terms of maturity this season.
End
At KV Mechelen they scream with joy. They can win again for the first time since mid-December and the timing could not be better after the defeats of Anderlecht, KAA Gent and Charleroi. KVM jumps over Charleroi and Ghent back into the top six and is now fifth with as many points as Anderlecht. Two counters proved to be enough to finish Antwerp.
Boersma to the side
Boersma receives applause after his debut for his own people. He did not score, but he was particularly useful in teamwork with his boundless energy. Bandé can complete the match.
Poor shot Babadi
Babadi tries again from far away, but his shot is well within Miras’ reach. The Mechelen goalkeeper has no problems with it.
Time is running out for Antwerp. The visitors keep trying, but the conclusion is that KV Mechelen gives away very little.
An extra 6 minutes will be added.
Raman misses a chance to make it 3-0
Raman gets the chance to completely decide the match with yet another sharp counter, but he delays just a little too long. Verstraeten is just able to block his shot.
The newly substituted Babadi immediately creates danger. The ball gets into his hands and he takes the shot in no time. Miras can just lift the shot over the bar.
Virtual fifth
KV Mechelen is getting closer to its first victory as mid-December. This was followed by a measly 3 out of 15, but now KV Mechelen virtually jumps to fifth place with as many points as Anderlecht.
Goalscorers to the side
applause for vanrafelghem, he is brought in for Raman at KV Mechelen. Bafdili also comes between the lines for the home team for the other goalscorer, Van Brederode.
janssen not past Miras
Antwerp’s possession of the ball also results in a chance. Praet finds Janssen and he takes a shot from the edge of the box,but Miras knows how to use the shot.
Scott was hit hard by Decoene, he is still a bit shaky in his legs. It remains to be seen whether he can continue his match.
Immediately yellow for Decoene
Not a good start for Decoene. In one of his first actions, he immediately makes an unfortunate pass at Scott, which immediately earns him a yellow card.
In addition to Antonio,Servais is also brought into the side.Decoene and Zekri are their replacements.
