BarcelonaNew resignation from the Government of the Generalitat. After President Salvador Illa left the hospital on Friday to continue his recovery from pubic osteomyelitis which forced him to be on leave for two weeks, this Friday the Minister of Education, Esther Niubó, announced that she will have to be temporarily removed from her position for medical reasons.
The Department of Education has explained the situation in a statement where it explains that Niubó will have to undergo “a surgical operation in the coming days and a subsequent recovery that will force him to delegate the direction of the Department in the coming weeks”.
The councilor also explained in a statement that she published in X that after several medical tests she will finally have to undergo a surgical intervention, which will involve “a mandatory parenthesis”. “For a few weeks I will be forced to significantly reduce my daily activity. I need this time to fully recover and resume activity as soon as possible and in the best conditions,” the message reads. Niubó added that she is “enthusiastic” and has shown “the utmost confidence” in the medical team treating her.
The president of the government, Salvador Illa, responded to Niubó’s announcement a few minutes later with a message of encouragement. Also in a post on X, he said: “I send you all my warmth. I wish you a speedy recovery. Lots of strength and lots of encouragement. See you soon!”.
Sense direct substitute
At this time, the Government does not plan to appoint a direct substitute to cover Niubó’s functions while she is removed from the present. As explained in the press release, the day-to-day running of the Ministry will be in the hands of the three Education Secretaries. Therefore, the department will be led by the General Secretary of the Department of Education and Professional Training, Teresa Sambola; the Secretary General of Vocational Training (FP), Francesc Roca Rosell and the Secretary General of Educational Improvement, Ignasi Giménez Renom, who took up the position only three months ago. All three will assume the executive decisions of the councillor.
With regard to the functions of the councilor and the representativeness of the department, it will be the councilor of the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, who will assume them. During the last two weeks, Dalmau has coordinated the executive during Illa’s convalescence. The public events will be undertaken by all members of the Government, adds the statement from the department.
