Dennis Schröder’s NBA journey continues: The basketball world champion from Braunschweig will probably be traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The trade has not been officially confirmed. But the Braunschweig NBA star already said goodbye to his fans on Instagram with the words “Thx Sacramento”. This is the 32-year-old’s eleventh stop in the North American professional league.
The trade is part of a larger deal involving multiple parties. This is reported by North American news portals such as “ESPN” and “The New York Times,” among others. In addition to Schröder, his previous teammate Keon Ellis is also moving to Cleveland. The Kings will receive winger De’Andre Hunter in return. The Chicago Bulls are also involved in the transfer and are getting Dario Saric and two second-round draft picks.
Switch to a title contender? Cavaliers remain in the playoff race
In terms of sport, the change means a new starting point for Schröder: While Sacramento has little chance of making the playoffs in the West, the Cavaliers are among the extended favorites in the East and are currently in fifth place. Schröder should come off the bench there and bring additional stability to the guard position. So far this season he has averaged 12.8 points, 5.3 assists and three rebounds per game.
The trade also has weight from a financial perspective. Through the deal, Cleveland will reduce its luxury tax burden by around $50 million. The NBA levies this penalty on teams whose salaries exceed the set threshold for the 2025/26 season – repeat offenders will be asked to pay particularly heavily.

It was hardly surprising that Schröder’s name has repeatedly appeared in transfer rumors. The development player himself emphasized that he knows the mechanisms of the league and expects short-term changes. For him, the main thing is to enjoy his time in the NBA – regardless of which jersey he wears.
Since entering the league in 2013, Schröder has played for Atlanta, Oklahoma City, the Lakers, Boston, Houston, Toronto, Brooklyn, Golden State, Detroit and Sacramento, among others. He is now at the top of the list of the most frequently traded players in NBA history – only Trevor Ariza was passed on more often. The record for most teams is currently held by Ish Smith with 13 stops.
