Bundesliga Matchday 21: Union Berlin & Frankfurt Draw

1. FC Union Berlin – Eintracht Frankfurt 1:1 (0:0)

Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 (0-0) on matchday 21 of the Bundesliga. After a short interruption at the beginning – Union Berlin fans had ignited pyrotechnics during the choreo for the club’s 60th birthday and the smoke obstructed the view – the game remained rather tough for long stretches.

When their new coach Albert Riera made his debut, the guests from Hesse initially took control of the game. Eintracht had significantly more possession of the ball at the beginning, but were unable to score. From the middle of the first half, the Frankfurt team also found themselves in trouble in their own penalty area. Kauã Santos, goalkeeper for Eintracht, who had recently been weak defensively, was able to excel on a long-range volley shot from Aljoscha Kemlein (41′).

It wasn’t until the 84th minute that Nathaniel Brown gave Frankfurt the lead. But Union quickly equalized with a penalty from Leopold Querfeld (87th). Before the penalty, Eintracht player Oscar Højlund received a yellow-red card for repeated foul play.

Union fans cleared snow around the stadium

This means that both teams remain winless in the new year. Eintracht Frankfurt has now been without a win for nine competitive games. Under the new head coach, the Hessians showed slight improvements in defense. Dino Toppmöller’s successor encouraged his unsettled players. “Maybe I have a magic wand, but believe me, I’ll do it,” the Mallorcan said before the game: “Everything will be different.”

Despite the difficult weather conditions with snowfall, ice grains and freezing rain in the capital, the game was able to take place. Union fans helped the club clear snow and ice in and around the An der Alten Försterei stadium. A similar action took place before the game against Mainz in January.
