FC Barcelona remains leaders in the Spanish football championship after this weekend.
The Catalans defeated RCD Mallorca 3-0 (1-0) at home on matchday 23 and are currently four points ahead of record champions Real Madrid.
Robert Lewandowski once again led his team on track. The now 37-year-old scored 1-0 (29th) early on Saturday evening in what had been a very tough home game after an assist from Dani Olmo and thus got his team back on track.
Lewandowski – no longer first choice
The Pole has of course already experienced a lot. In a total of twelve years in the Bundesliga, he has developed into something of a world top scorer for Borussia Dortmund (103 goals) and Bayern Munich (344 goals). And at FC Barcelona, to which he moved in 2022 as a 33-year-old, hardly anyone can fool him in front of the opposing goal. In his 174th appearance for the Catalans he scored his 114th goal.
For Lewandowski, all of this is probably not that unimportant. His contract expires at the end of the season, and the Catalans seem to be seriously thinking about sorting out the goal-scoring Pole. With Ferran Tores, Barca have found a brilliant successor at the forefront, and Lewandowski has recently had to sit on the bench more and more often.
“He’s doing a good job”
Recently there was speculation in the Spanish media that the veteran could extend his contract again if he accepted a significant reduction in salary. It is also rumored that coach Hansi Flick – a proven fan of Lewandowski – would only be happy to see his experienced striker in the Barca jersey for another season. “He does a good job, sometimes he wants to play more. That’s normal”said Flick at the press conference before the league game against Mallorca. In that game, “Lewa” got his team going.
Lamine Yamal could have increased the score in the match against Mallorca before the break and did so in the 61st minute. Former Leipzig player Dani Olmo was also involved in this goal. Marc Bernal (83rd) added the third goal. Arch-rival Real Madrid will only play at FC Valencia on Sunday evening.
