The Superleague continues to fall apart. And it lost a crucial member this Saturday, since Barça announced that it was withdrawing from the project. Alongside its rival, Real Madrid, the Catalan club was one of the most invested in this European championship project reserved for the biggest clubs.
“FC Barcelona announces today that it has informed the European Super League Company and the clubs involved of its withdrawal from the Superleague project,” he soberly announced in a press release. Despite the failure of the project, in April 2021, several clubs involved remained to negotiate with UEFA, without much success.
Only Real Madrid remains in the project
A22, the company which oversees the project, is said to have even held meetings with UEFA to introduce its concept into the new Champions League format. But the European body did not follow up on the proposal, nor on the TV channel which would have been created for the occasion.
After the departure of Juventus in 2023 and that of Barça this Saturday, only Real Madrid remains in favor of the project. And despite its 13 Champions League, the White House no longer really appears in a position to negotiate, especially since the ECA, the largest union of European football clubs, chaired by Nasser al-Khelaïfi, has established itself as a good interlocutor for UEFA.
