This Monday, during the 1st round in Montpellier, Arthur Gea took advantage of the abandonment of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to qualify for the next round, while Adrian Mannarino beat Pedro Martinez.
Arthur Gea didn’t ask for that much. Indeed, while he had made his mark at the Australian Open by outclassing the Czech Jiri Lehecka in the first round, the Frenchman once again showed great things when he entered the fray in Montpellier. Opposed to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the current world number 168 qualified for the 2nd round of the Occitanie Open following the abandonment of his opponent after 39 minutes of play, while the score was 6-3 in his favor.
After losing the first set, the 57th in the world was quickly forced to call it quits due to an eye injury. Trailing 0-40 in the first game of the second set, Mpetshi Perricard missed a volley and the ball ended up hitting his left eye. Although he took a medical time out, he was unable to resume and unfortunately had to give up. As a result, it is Gea, author of a good first set, who will challenge the Czech Tomas Machac (28th in the world) in the 2nd round.
First success since October for Mannarino
This Monday, Adrian Mannarino could have a smile. Indeed, while he had not won a match since October 1 (against Matteo Berrettini in the first round in Shanghai), the Frenchman therefore ended a long series of defeats (eight and three others during an exhibition) thanks to his victory in two sets (7-6, 6-1) and 1h36 of play against Pedro Martinez.
After a tight first round concluded in a decisive game (7-3), the 70th in the world then took place in Montpellier. It was also with a shutout on his serve that Mannarino finished the job against the Spaniard (77th in the world), completely overwhelmed at the end. In the 2nd round of the Occitanie Open, the Frenchman will face the winner of the match between Ugo Humbert (38th in the world) and the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (67th in the world) this Tuesday. This will, a priori, be a completely different challenge to take on.
