Ajax: Henderson Return for Defensive Midfield Role

Ajax has thought about bringing back Jordan Henderson during the winter transfer window Football International to report. In a desperate attempt to get an experienced ‘number 6’, the Amsterdam team planned to throw a ball at the 35-year-old midfielder.

The news is very striking, as Henderson left the Johan Cruijff ArenA last summer. The Englishman is under contract with Brentford until mid-2027.

Club watcher Lentin Goodijk says in a video item from VI that Ajax has considered throwing a line at Henderson.

“Ajax has considered throwing a line at Henderson. He lost his starting place at Brentford. Everything has been considered, but Ajax has not succeeded,” said Goodijk.

“With Stije Resink and Kodai Sano it turned out not to be possible. Ajax actually gambled a bit and lost. It also turned out to be difficult on the rental market.”

“Ajax also bet on a player from a top competition who would look for a new club towards the end of the window, but due to various circumstances this did not work out.”

Finally, Goodijk says that in addition to Henderson, Daley Blind, Manuel Ugarte, Fred, Edson Álvarez, Hidemasa Morita, Wataru Endo and Christian Nørgaard were in the picture.
