The United States won 2-1 in the women’s ice hockey final against Canada held at the Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan, Italy on the 20th (Korean time) and took the top spot.
Edwards, a student at the University of Wisconsin, was selected for the U.S. national team before the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PHWL) draft in June, and had financial difficulties accompanying her family to Italy.
The method the Edwards family came up with was fundraising.
According to the Associated Press, Edwards’ father, Robert Edwards, launched a fundraising campaign on the support site ‘GoFundMe’ under the title ‘Please send Laila’s family to the Olympics to cheer on them.’
The father said, “My daughter needed help because there are a lot of ups and downs when competing at a high level (like the Winter Olympics). So I thought, ‘I need to put my pride aside and start fundraising.'”
The original goal was $50,000 (about 72 million won), but the Edwards family’s wish came true when a total of more than $61,000 (about 88 million won) was raised.
The largest donation was $10,000 (approximately 14 million won), which was reportedly donated by NFL stars Jason Kelce (retired) and Travis Kelce (Kansas City), also from Ohio, USA.
Edwards enjoyed the joy of winning the gold medal in front of 10 family members and 4 friends who accompanied him to Italy.
Edwards, who won the gold medal, expressed gratitude to his family, saying, “They are more important to me than anything else. They are the people who helped me get to this point, join the U.S. national team, and achieve my dream.”
