Governor Marcelo Orrego led the opening of the Federal Volleyball League this Tuesday afternoon, in an event held at the Aldo Cantoni Stadium.
During the ceremony, the president was accompanied by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Guido Romero; the Secretary of Sports, Pablo Tabachnik; and authorities of the San Juan Volleyball Federation headed by its president, Mario Lueje; together with the third vice president of the Argentine Volleyball Federation (FeVA), Eduardo Fernández, as well as athletes from various provinces and the general public.
In his welcome speech, the president thanked the representatives of the federations for their support in this exciting sporting event that, as he stressed, “exceeds all expectations.”
Orrego addressed the participants, highlighting that “it is an enormous privilege to have these more than 48 delegations from different parts of the country. For the people of San Juan, sport is a State policy, in which those who practice it learn to work as a team, to represent their province. So, all my recognition and all my respect to you, to your teachers, to the entire team that has accompanied you, to the Sports Secretariat and Pablo Tabachnik, to the Ministry and the San Juan Sports Agency.”
Likewise, the governor urged the participants to take advantage of their stay to get to know the attractions of San Juan: “I tell them, of course, to enjoy the sports and also the social moments, I invite them to explore San Juan and its natural resources that are precious, its gastronomy and its culture.”
For his part, Lueje highlighted the federal nature of the competition and thanked the provincial management for serving as the headquarters.
About the sporting event
The tournament formally began this Tuesday and has the presence of about a thousand players integrated into some 50 teams from all over the country, who will play the matches from February 3 to 12 at the headquarters of the Aldo Cantoni and the Vicente Alejo Chancay Velodrome.
The return of this third category of national volleyball to the province is due to the successful organization of previous editions and the excellence of the local sports infrastructure. The organization is carried out by the San Juan Volleyball Federation, under the supervision of FeVA and the sponsorship of the Government of San Juan through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports and the San Juan Sports Agency.
In total, the contest brings together 24 women’s and 26 men’s teams, among which are the local teams of Hispano, Universidad and Ausonia in the men’s branch, while in the women’s branch Obras, Universidad, UNAV, Hispano, Ausonia, UPCN and UVT participate.
The competition attracts both traditional institutions and growing clubs from provinces such as Santa Fe, Tucumán, Santa Cruz, Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Entre Ríos, City of Buenos Aires, Chubut, La Pampa, Mendoza, Catamarca, La Rioja, Jujuy and Formosa.
The main sporting incentive is promotion to the National League 2027, reserved for the two finalist teams in each branch, following the example of those promoted in the 2025 edition: San Martín Pacífico, Mendoza Regatas, Sonder de Rosario and Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata.
The holding of the League confirms San Juan as a strategic pole for important events, generating a positive economic and tourist impact for more than a week.
