Alexander Zverev had an unpleasant opening draw at the Australian Open. Last year’s finalist will face Canadian Gabriel Diallo, number 41 in the tennis world, in the first round. It is the first duel between the two. After that, the Australian Alexei Popyrin could wait for number three seed Zverev.
Zverev was drawn into the half of the tournament with world number one Carlos Alcaraz. The world number three could meet the Spaniard in a possible semi-final. In the lower half of the tournament are defending champion Jannik Sinner from Italy and the Serbian Novak Djokovic.
Lys faces an interesting task
The start to the first Grand Slam tournament of the year will not be easy for Eva Lys either. The German number one, who made it to the round of 16 last year as a so-called lucky loser, will play in the first round against Sorana Cirstea from Romania. After that there could be a duel with the former world number one and two-time Melbourne winner Naomi Osaka from Japan.
The Australian Open starts this Sunday. In addition to Zverev and Lys, six other German tennis professionals have qualified so far. For the men, Yannick Hanfmann plays against a qualifier, Daniel Altmaier against Marin Cilic and Jan-Lennard Struff against Vit Kopriva. In the women’s first round there will be duels Tatjana Maria against Petra Marcinko, Ella Seidel against Oxana Selechmetjewa and Laura Siegemund against Liudmila Samsonova.
