The Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodriguez will join Team Cuba for the Classic World Championship 2026 joining after receiving approval from the Toronto Blue Jays, as journalist Francys Romero said in his social media reported.
Rodríguez plans to report to Arizona on March 1where the Cuban selection will carry out part of their pre-tournament preparation. According to the information, the pitcher will operate exclusively from the bullpen, with a limit of up to two innings per outing, in coordination with the organization MLB.
Yariel’s presence represents an important reinforcement for Cuba’s pitching staff, especially in a context marked by the absence of major league players ahead of the Classic. His role as a short reliever will allow the team to rely on a high-performance arm without compromising his regular-season workload.
It is important to remember that the pitcher — born in Camaguey — broke off relations with the Cuban Sports Federation a few years ago after failing to show up for the contract brokered for him in Japan. In response, the official body even demanded $10 million in compensation, in one of the most tense episodes between the regime and a high-level athlete.
Today, however, history seems to have taken a 180 degree turn. The possible return of the lanzallama not only marks a radical change in the relationship with the sports authorities, but could also set a precedent and open a new approach by the Cuban government towards the players who decide to break with the official system and seek their professional development outside the island.
The 2026 Baseball World Cup will take place in March, with Cuba placed in Group A in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There the country will try to repeat – or improve – the performance of the previous edition, in which it reached the semi-finals.
