Skier Weidle-Winkelmann comes second in Tarvisio
Kira Weidle-Winkelmann provides another German encouragement three weeks before the Olympics. Emma Aicher also impresses in the descent from Tarvisio. A local hero celebrates her debut victory.
Ski racer Kira Weidle-Winkelmann has set another example three weeks before the opening of the Winter Olympics. The Starnberg native took second place in Italian Nicol Delago’s first World Cup victory in the Tarvisio downhill. US star Lindsey Vonn came third.
For Weidle-Winkelmann it is the second podium finish this season. She also came second in Val d’Isère, France, shortly before Christmas. Weidle-Winkelmann’s teammate Emma Aicher also impressed at the first World Cup stop in Tarvisio in 15 years and finished fifth.
Mistake costs possible victory
Fog made visibility difficult in places on the Di Prampero slope. A mistake in the lower section of the route cost Weidle-Winkelmann valuable time and a possible first World Cup victory of her career. “It hurts,” the 29-year-old told ZDF. She “cursed a bit at the mistake.” All in all, it was a “good trip” and she was satisfied. “I know I’m there and it’s possible to win a race.”
In Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, where the women’s Olympic races will be held in February, Weidle-Winkelmann won World Championship silver in the downhill race five years ago. At that time, Aicher had contributed to Germany’s bronze medal in the team competition without any World Cup experience.
Saturday’s results should give the speed duo further confidence for the highlight of the season. There is another Super-G coming up in Tarvisio on Sunday.
