Minnesota’s Jesper Wallstedt is highlighted as a possible recipient of the NHL rookie of the year award. According to a survey, the Swede is second on the list.
Each year, a handful of players are awarded awards for their efforts during the season. The Calder Trophy, the award for the rookie of the year, is voted for by journalists and this year it could very well go to a Swedish player.
According to nhl.com’s mapping, Jesper Wallstedt gets 50 points, if the vote were to take place now, and is thus second on the list.
Wallstedt was named rookie of the month in November after a save percentage of nearly 97 percent during the month’s six games. Halfway through the season, the same figure is almost 93 percent.
However, he is one step away from taking over the top spot from the Islanders’ Matthew Schaefer. According to the mapping, the 18-year-old back gets 78 points.
Wallstedt is also seventh on the list of possible recipients of the award as the season’s goalkeeper, the Vezina Trophy, and is selected in Sweden’s Olympic squad.
