VfL Wolfsburg is working intensively on possible defensive reinforcements. As the AZ/WAZ Reportedly, the club is currently discussing the signing of Jeanuël Belocian from Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The background is the vulnerable defense of Lower Saxony, which has already conceded 42 goals after 20 league games.
Belocian has been under contract with Bayer Leverkusen since summer 2024 and can be used both in the center of defense and on the left side. This is where VfL currently sees a need for action. The 20-year-old is considered a promising player for the Werkself. After tearing his cruciate ligament around a year ago, he fought his way back and has been playing regular minutes again since October. However, this week Belocian was dealt a blow when he was left out of the Champions League squad following the return of Exequiel Palacios.
Šutalo is also an issue at VfL
Next to Belocian is loud AZ/WAZ Josip Šutalo from AFC Ajax is also a candidate. The name of the 25-year-old Croatian international is currently being discussed within the club. The Wolfsburg team had originally asked Ajax about Ko Itakura, but the Dutch rejected a move for the ex-Gladbach player and brought Šutalo into discussion instead. Initially, those responsible for VfL stuck to Itakura, but Šutalo has now become more of a focus.
The central defender moved from GNK Dinamo Zagreb to Amsterdam in 2023, but recently lost his regular place after an injury. Despite a contract until 2028, a winter departure is considered possible.
It remains to be seen whether the Wolfsburg team will make concrete efforts to recruit one of the two candidates in the coming days. However, one thing is clear: defense is the focus of current squad planning.
