The Dutch tennis players were eliminated in the group stage of the United Cup. At the tournament for mixed national teams, the Netherlands lost three games to Poland in Sydney, just as happened earlier against Germany.
It is only the second time that the Netherlands has participated in the United Cup, having also failed in the group stage in 2024. The winners of the six groups of three, as well as the best runners-up, advance to the quarter-finals.
Because Poland previously won 3-0 against Germany, Greek track (ATP-26) had to start with a victory over Hubert Hurkacz to keep a view of the next round. That quickly turned out to be a difficult task.
21 aces
Hurkacz, who had not appeared on the court for more than six months before this tournament and has dropped to 83rd place in the world rankings, was good for no fewer than 21 aces in two sets. Greekpoor nevertheless kept up well in the second set, but lost: 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Lamens (WTA-97) then lost to Iga Swiatek, number 2 in the world. The South Holland player came back nicely to 3-3 in the first set after a break from the Polish, but was then defeated quickly: 3-6, 2-6.
In the mixed doubles, Demi Schuurs and David Pel managed a tiebreak, but lost to Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zieliński: 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. Poland advances to the next round as a clear group winner. Switzerland, Australia, Greece and the United States have also figured it out so far.
